The location of the body?

I am confused as to how the body ended up in the back of the car. It was in the basement in a wicker chest; who moved it and when (and why)? Also, right before the conclusion the dog is crying at the basement door and has his paws up on it, like he did earlier in the movie, suggesting that the body is still down there.

***SPOILERS***

The dog towards the end is crying to go out at the main door. Not crying at the door to the basement. There is opening of doors and general movement when Elizabeth Montgomery is on the phone at one point. That's when the body was shifted by somebody unseen on screen. All the hints point to Ben being the person who shifted the body and to being the murderer.
