I can definitely understand why someone wouldn't like this film in particular, or Godard films in general. Godard seems to be a filmmaker that either you like, or you don't. It's like Rap Music. Either you like it or you don't. I myself think that Rap sucks but then again, I'm 65, and not 14.

Most people see viewing a film as an opportunity for entertainment. I myself don't look primarily for the entertainment value of a film. For me a film is primarily something to think about and consider, not as something that will entertain me. That doesn't mean that I think that my way of looking at the film viewing experience is in anyway better than anyone else's. That's just me, and what I personally get out of viewing a film.

From that standpoint, that's why I really love this film. Admittedly in terms of entertainment value, it sucks. But this film gives me a lot to think about and consider.

This film makes little sense if you take anything in it at face value. The only way that you can really appreciate this film is if you're like me, and I see everything in this film as a symbol, not at all as a literal portrayal of reality. Going from there, this film gives me a lot to think about and consider, trying to figure out what all the symbols mean, and how they all fit together.

Does this sound like a boring way to look at movies to you? I would be surprised if you said that it didn't. But that's just me, and what I get out of watching movies, They're all thought exercises. And the films that I really don't like are those that seem to have a lot of entertainment value, but don't seem to give me much to think about.

Think about the criticisms in this this thread about the pointless 5 min monologues by the various characters. From my perspective, Godard knew quite well how poorly these monlogues are at face value. But, for me, Godard was making a point here about how inadequate language is in general to communicate anythimg really important. The same thing can be said about almost the whole script of this film, the Marxist book seller in the supermarket, the "revolutionary" talk by the students, the chit chat between Jacques and Suzanne. It's just absurd, It's All Absurd !!!! But again, I don't think that this shows a failing on Godard's part as a filmmaker. From where I sit, he knew very well how all the spoken lines would come across to the viewer, but he did it anyway. For me, Godard is trying to make the point that everything we say, the whole concept of language is ABSURD, because there's no way that words can really capture and make reality understandable, as hard as we try to the contrary.

I don't expect anybody to agree with this interpretation of this film because, quite frankly, I don't watch movies to make myself popular with other people. I watch movies for what I can get out them for myself. And from that admittedly selfish perspective, I get a lot out of this film for myself.
