What make of guns are there that the bad guys use ?

I've just seen Joe Kidd again last sunday night on television and surely the the hand guns and rifle that the bad guys use are way too modern for that time?Does anyone knows what make of guns they are and are they accurate for that time the movie is set?

reply

Mauser C98 pistol - no problem there.

Not sure about the sniper job but the Savage repeating rifle was also from the 1890s, which is at least when this is set, if not a little later.

reply

C96, dude, not C98.

reply

Sorry, but it's a C98. The C96 didn't come with a holster/stock for use as a carbine and had a shorter barrel than the C98.

Geez, Burrell....you have never shot an HS Precision HTR takedown rifle. In 308, I shoot a 5-group into a 6 inch circle at 800 yards all day long. I think ROBAR would do the same job.

I think the purpose of the Mauser was

1. To indicate the time period, i.e. 1900.

2. To mark it's owner as a bad guy.
Mausers tend to get used by bad guys in films.

Back then, Mauser was one of the best guns around.

'Let's eat Grandma!' or, 'Let's eat, Grandma!' Punctuation saves lives. Use it. Save a life.

Well a few years late. The story is set in the first decade of the 1900's. The weapons work.

Lamar (Don Stroud) uses a Mauser c/96 Broomhandle. It was introduced in 1896 by Mauser. For what it's worth the Broomhandle used in the movie is from the end of the pistol's production run (1896-1937), but it's close enough and works.

Mingo (James Wainwright) carries a Remington-Keene Sporterized rifle. The Remington-Keene rifle was brought out in 1885 by Remington so no trouble there. The scope on the rifle is too modern, but it looks good.

Frank HArlan (Robert Duvall) carries a Savage Model 99 rifle. The Savage company introduced the Model 99 in 1899 and made it until 1999. Like the Broomhandle the rifle seen in the movie is(or was in 1972)a later version, but it looks good.

The sniper rifle that Joe Kidd (Eastwood) uses is a Canadian Ross Rifle Model 1910. It's been sporterized and the scope is too modern. Off all the weapons the Ross is pushing things the hardest. It's right on the edge of plausibility.

So the weapons are and aren't totally accurate.

This was very enlightening; thank you for sharing the make/model and information on the historical accuracy of those weapons.

I found this online page on the Mauser C96: http://sportsmansvintagepress.com/read-free/mauser-rifles-pistols-table-of-contents/the-mauser-c96-other-mauser-pistols/.
