How was Stacy Keach not nominated for Best Actor for this?

Wow, talk about a crime. I know 1972 was a great year for actors, but this is a great, mammoth performance. Apparantly if you go to the Stacy Keach bio there is info in the trivia section about critics conspiring together to not give him votes to win the NY Film Critics Award or something along those lines.

Yeah, this is easily one of the best performances I've ever seen.

I agree, a stunning performance. Mai Yamane! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-sYFirfywY&feature=related

I was also wondering the same thing. Tully was so raw, believable, and relatable and Keach exhibited these characteristics so wonderfully. I guess that was also the year that The Godfather swept the Oscar nominations and media attention but, still, for Keach to not even be considered for a nomination is unfortunate, IMO. I thought both his performance and this film were wonderful.

Ditto.

Solid performance, but not extremely good. The whole point of the Oscars is to celebrate excellence, not just solid work.

You give the Oscars to performances that are just solid, then the Oscars lose value
