hilarious goof in the movie

just saw this tonight for the first time. during the scene where they tell the team that brian has cancer, the guys standing behind gale in the shot are already crying before gale even tells them the news. i've never seen something like that in a movie before.

reply

Yeah I noticed that too. Really wish they would watch out for that sort of thing.

reply

Most of the team already knew about Brian.

"Ev'ryone deserves the chance to fly!"

I think we could give the guys a pass here; these were not extras, but rather real-life players for the Chicago Bears, many of whom knew Brian and played alongside him. Having to re-live this moment in their lives was probably very emotional for them, so you can't really fault them if they aren't behaving like "professional actors".

Goof is not so "hilarious" now, is it?

Yeah, they're dead, they're--all messed up.

reply

I never noticed, but yeah, they are not actors...

In Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) when Adam (Howard Keel) says it is bedtime on his honeymoon, the brother who says 'yours too' leans in too early, goes back, then leans in again when he says his line.

Bellamafia, when the ladies are cleaning up all the blood, Vanessa Redgrave begins reacting to the opening of the door BEFORE the door opened, also apparently getting her cue off as well.

There was a Pepsi commercial many decades ago where granma was supposed to choose cup A (Pepsi) over cup B (Coke) and one of the grandkids behind her gave a shocked reaction too soon.

But I'll go with everyone else here; they were the real team players of the real Piccolo.

reply

Yes thats a good point about them being the
actual players. However, there may be another
goof the IMDB didn't mention. When the coaches
inform Gale Sayers about him and Brian Piccolo
rooming together. The one coach mentions that
it's 1965 and about going to cities such as
Houston and Miami. Those teams would be the
Oilers and Dolphins respectively which were
in the AFL at that time. I believe the NFL
and AFL didn't play each other until the
First Super Bowl which occurred after the
1966 season in January of 67.

Poor, lame direction. But given that this was, after all, a made-for-TV movie, that's to be expected.

Watch the end of Dr. Strangelove...when he's in the wheelchair with the others standing behind him, you can see a couple of actors laughing when Sellers starts with chair and his arm doing the Nazi salute.

I just finished watching the movie. I noticed the guys behind Gale. I think they over-acted, if you will, to the news. When he said that Brian was sick, they suddenly began to look emotional. I was thinking that at least they should have asked for details before they got so emotional because the sickness could have been a cold or the flu! What in the world? That was funny to me.

I JUST watched tbat scene and they are not really crying, they just look concerned. Gale starts his speech with a serious tone, so everyone knows this isn’t good news coming. The guys behind him look like they are preparing to receive bad news. Not the best actors but not “a hilarious goof” level awful.

However, Shelley Fabares is laughing at Brian’s jokes before he even tells them in the restaurant scene.
