Is Banacek Shown on TV Anymore?

I really wish I could see the Banacek episodes on TV but I can't find them anywhere on TV or on the web. Can anyone help?? I NEED to see a high quality detective show.

Thanks to everyone for the tips on Banacek. I saw an episode tonight on Cozi TV. I have seen all episodes several times but the show never gets old for me. It's too bad that more episodes weren't produced.

An article I cited somewhere on the Banacek boards (celebrating the 40 years which have passed since Banacek was on the air) discussed why they only had 8 episodes/season, dodging the metadata we have about the series & what role it played in the NBC Mystery Movie (Peppard's situation notwithstanding). IIRC, it said something about, (paraphrased) "if you could come up with more than eight perfect crimes in a season, "then you're probably the perfect criminal out doing the things you're imagining"

e.g.
"When you're good at something, never do it for free."

Cozi TV airs an episode every Monday. In the L.A. area, it's channel 4.2 at 8:00p. (That's off the airwaves, not via cable.)

Of course it's still on. Why do you think I post upcoming episodes about as early as they are publicly available? I didn't get one posted today (before now) because I wasn't able to get to a keyboard.

Here in Central Indiana, it's available via OTA (Over The Air) or Cable...Satellite dishes? Nope. That's where OTA comes into play.

If someone wants to check for a channel in their area, try this: http://www.cozitv.com/get-cozi-tv/

MeTV is currently airing episodes, at least in Spokane, WA.

It's on @ 11:30pm (MeTV) in Texas.

BTW, I like this show but based on only 17 episodes, I guess not too many other folks did.

Yeah, I don't recall watching it the first time around. I think it seemed like a typical detective-type procedural, of which there were already too many at the time. And I don't think that making him an insurance investigator was anything special or really different from what was already out there. I'll try a few episodes now, but may give up quickly if it doesn't hold my interest.

I've seen a couple of shows so far and it doesn't have the "shine" that it did when I was a kid. Funny how the episodes have changed so much.. 

BTW, Banacek's demeanor kinda reminds me of Steve McQueen in The Thomas Crown Affair.

Actually it was as popular as the other NBC Mystery Movies Columbo, McCloud, McMillan and Wife etc.. But, Peppard, who still thought television was a step down from his movie career, played diva, wanted out thinking there were greener pastures and walked off. NBC knew it had a ratings hit, but a technicality in Peppard's contract had called for a WEEKLY series, which Banacek was not. So, NBC knew that legally Peppard would win in a court battle. That along with Peppard's well publicized bad mood swings influenced NBC to to let him walk.

About ten years later, when Peppard no longer had a film career, he came back to NBC in The A Team, which ran for 5 seasons. Though The A Team was VERY popular, it was not in the same league as Banacek. But, after the pilot got incredible ratings when it aired after the Super Bowl, NBC offered Peppard big money and some creative control, and his on set mood swings did not plague The A team as they had Banacek.

Thanks for the reply and especially the insight. I actually forgot about the A-Team. I never really warmed up to that show but I know it was very popular. I remember being pretty excited when the mystery movies were on. Back then we had only three channels (4 if the weather was right ).

Anyway I always liked Banacek when it was that show's turn to be on. I never realized the reason(s) behind only 17 shows until now.

Thanks again.

Currently you can find Banacek on YouTube. How long they'll remain up before they get yanked on copyright violations is anyone's guess.

I thought MeTV had a national lineup, but in the midwest it wasn't on in January, but about end of April they started rotating the old mystery of the weeks at 11:30 pm. There is a week of Banacek, plus weeks of Columbo, mcmillan and wife, and mccloud. Even with the small number of episodes it will take some time to show them all so maybe they will just keep it in the rotation....

metv is on some cable/sat packages, but is also over the air as a supplemental channel in many places.....

I'm posting this just in case you get an automatic notification there's been a post in response to yours - and that it's a recent post -= check out my post about next week on MeTV. It's only 5 episodes, but it's better than none.

Here's another heads up for anyone who gets an automatic notification about this thread.

I just noticed that 5 episodes of 'Banacek' are airing on MeTV between Sept. 26 through Oct. 1, at least in the Indianapolis market. The show airs at 3 a.m. The episode on now (Wednesday morning) is 'Fly Me — If You Can Find Me,' featuring a 23-year-old Victoria Principal. 😍 — • —

I didn't realize until a short period of time ago I'd posted the wrong channel.

But I did post an alert 11 days ago...there's a list of mental tasks I perform whenever I'm waiting for a long job run to complete and checking to see if Banacek is coming up in the next 2 weeks -- most cable systems will give you 10-11 days, but if you use something such as TitanTV, you can get two full weeks...

Tonight the final 14th episode of the series, "Now You See Him, Now You Don't", of the second season aired tonight/this morning on MeTV.

The complaints about this series seem to come from viewers who do not realize this series was movie length, not the "usual" 60 minute time slot episodes, and there were two seasons, totaling 14 shows. (Think of other similar shows, like McMillan And Wife for another example of movie length shows. BTW, that series is also running on the over the air broadcasts as well.

The following is a tiny bit of a spoiler about a previous show, for viewers that have seen a certain older sci-fi movie .
That episode had a powerful rocket engine prototype on display, shown inside a sealed, rotating plastic cylinder. The engine disappeared from the container, while inside a room filled with people, during a brief power outage. The entire guest list was strictly by invitation, and was limited to the investors, and somewhat crashed by federal agents who claimed it was "federal property" (even though it was completely developed with private funding), and so secret it should never be on display.
Naturally the Feds were not pleased when it suddenly went missing, right in front of them, and it was heavily insured, enter Banacek...

The "giveaway" sci-fi movie is LOGAN'S RUN. In that movie, Michael York's character is being interrogated, and a 'surrogate' of him is answering questions. The surrogate is a copy of his head, inside a rotating plastic cylinder, and it says "There is no sanctuary.", while perfectly synchronized with the moving lips of his 'surrogate' (which was generated by a computer, synchronized to his thoughts). Think of a lie detector that cannot be fooled.

There are 16 episodes of Banacek, plus the pilot movie.

Interesting catch! I'd forgotten about that part of the movie.

Speaking of that movie - I took a word from that movie as a revival of a programming language. It seems so much more interesting than what other have suggested -- and it makes for a much easier & original logo:
