Too bland for a feature film

I disagree with your feeling that this film lacked bite. It may be that I don't understand what you mean by "bite". I am just assuming that you meant excitement when you said that....
As for the chills coming a little too late, I have no idea of what that means either.
We, the audience, got the feeling that something was wrong right from the start when the Kinsolving name was mentioned. The whole situation seemed strange when
Francesca arrived. The "chills" kept coming little by little after that. I was terrified when Kathleen revealed the fact that Kenny was in the house.
The story may have seemed to have a slow build to you but in my opinion, I think it was an interesting story and it unfolded perfectly.

I read the book years ago. It's unusual to say this but I felt that the film was so much better.
