Blu Ray: Cleaning up What Altman Wanted Dirty

He wanted the film to look like it was viewed from a dirty window. The snapcase DVD's kept that but the Blu Ray Criterion with the amazing cover cleans it up.

And I'm not complaining. It looks fantastic.

Usually cleaning what's meant to be dirty bugs me. I actually bought the older 1990's DVD for Raging Bull and can't even touch any of the others: From the boxset remastered DVD to any Blu Ray.

This movie, it works though. The lighting keeps what Robert Altman intended.

A slowburn and perfectly subtle masterpiece.

How is it cleaned up? The film is incredibly grainy and Criterion has faithfully encoded that grain. In large portions this looks rather like 16mm. How could DVD possibly properly handle the replication of such a grainy and extreme look?

This all is utter nonsense. No DVD can look like film, like 35mm - bluray can get much closer.

It would be best if both versions were available.

While I was watching I thought several times that it was a little too much work to be able to see what was going on, but on the other hand, it felt a lot more realistic, like an old daguerreotype.

So I can go either way on it.
