I was expecting a great film. I had seen the Stallone version. It was okay. Boy, was I wrong. This movie is awful. You have no empathy for Carter. He has been away for years from his brother, he is a womanizer, and we are supposed to like him? This movie was awful. There was a much better film made that year - Shaft. You liked Shaft. This movie was one of the worst films I have ever seen. What an eyesore.

shareI'm guessing you are American and fairly young. I base this on your opinion of the Stallone version vs the Caine version. This movie is highly regarded one of the best British gangster movies ever made and you obviously can't see what has been in front of you.
shareJack Carter shouts this line when he is trying to make sense of why his brother, a good guy, was killed. He knows it should be him in the coffin because he's the bad egg of the family.
You are not meant to have empathy for Jack, he has none for himself, so you have missed the point of the narrative strengths I'm sad to say.
