Actually just got the blu ray box set for £8 !! Rewatched Dirty Harry this morning. Still the best one. At the moment I would say.
Pretty much the order they are already in is my ranking. But will have to rewatch them again.

Sudden Impact- First hour is basically a highlight reel. And it actually wasn't meant to be a Dirty Harry film, Charles Pierce who has a story credit along with another writer (his name escapes me, but he wrote Town That Dreaded Sundown) wrote a screenplay, which was unrelated to the series and later rewritten by another writer to,tie into the series.

Dirty Harry
Magnum Force
The Enforcer
The Dead Pool

Where's Sudden Impact?

I think he rated Sudden Impact as his favorite DH film (hence the extended comments) of the bunch with the original in second place.

My bad lol. I had to read it again, I guess I missed it. Thanks.

Glad to help...I, too was surprised that the Original is not in first place. I rank it: DH, MagForce & Sudden Impact. Oddly enough Enforcer & Dead Pool were the lowest ranked for me.

I agree, I don't know why The Enforcer is ranked higher than Sudden Impact on Rotten Tomatoes.

Sudden Impact is way too low on your list. It has the most infamous line of the series, "Go ahead, make my day" and the smug guy he calls dogsh!t. That movie is a classic and the only one of the series directed by Clint.

Here's my list:

1. Dirty Harry
2. Sudden Impact
3. Magnum Force
4. The Dead Pool
5. The Enforcer

BTW, the coffee shop in Sudden Impact where he says the line is now a McDonalds! You can see the Third st bridge in the background when Harry pulls into the driveway. That bridge was also used in the Enforcer when they capture the mayor and today its still there right next to the SF Giants ballpark.

1 - Dirty Harry
2 - Sudden Impact
3 - Magnum Force
4 - The Enforcer
5 - The Dead Pool (the only one I really didn't like at all.)

The bad news is you have houseguests. There is no good news.

To each their own, Doctor_Penix, but, for the most part, I've never liked sequels, let alone remakes to films, and I see no reason to believe that I would've liked any of the other Dirty Harry movies any better.

reply

I wasn't really directing my post to you....just responding at the bottom of the thread.

Some sequels are good (although I agree that most stink.) The Godfather II is a rare instance where the sequel was actually better than the original. Remakes, on the other hand, almost always suck donkey balls.

The bad news is you have houseguests. There is no good news.

reply

Okay...thanks, Doctor_Penix.

Your assessment of sequels and remakes of films generally is spot-on. Most of them do stink, and while I agree that Godfather II was a rare exception to that, so were Superman II and Spiderman II. After that, they started to decline, if one gets the drift. Remakes of movies are especially horrible most of the time, and they often go over like lead balloons with the general movie-going public...inotherwords, very poorly. Remakes of films, with rare exceptions, just cut the heart and soul right out of the films that're being re-made. Planet of the Apes and Hitchcock's Psycho are two excellent examples of film re-makes that just didn't work. The big reason that there are so many sequels and remakes of films these days is because Hollywood has essentially run out of creative ideas.

reply

Good examples. Here is a good example of a great movie followed by a horrid sequel.....The Exorcist is one of the greatest horror films ever made, The Exorcist Part 2: The Heretic is probably one of the worst films, bar none, that was ever made. Not even bad in a way that is 'funny'....just wretchedly bad. Ellen Burstyn's character was written out because, story has it, she read the script and said "Hell no!"

As far as the Harry movies are concerned.....Sudden Impact is an excellent film (nearly as good as the original Dirty Harry), and the best performance that Sondra Locke ever gave. Magnum Force was a good, solid police drama. The Enforcer was alright....nothing to get excited about, but not bad either. The Dead Pool, on the other hand, was a poor film and should be avoided.

So....if you are ever inclined to give a Dirty Harry sequel a chance, sit down with Sudden Impact and you will probably be pleasantly surprised.

The bad news is you have houseguests. There is no good news.

1. Magnum Force
My personal favorite because the film had a lot of cool smart moments for Harry (deliberately throwing the shooting competition to get a ballistic) and plenty of good gun action. I also like how the villains are Harry if he was much worse.
2. Dirty Harry (close second)
Yeah I know some of you will question why this isn't first. Yes the film established future crime dramas, but personally it was a little too slow for me and a little too disturbing/annoying to watch at times. If I rewatch it, I have to skip over certain scenes.
3. Sudden Impact
Despite being the 4th entry, I felt it still grabbed the excitement level. Personally I don't like how 80's the movie looked (Dirty Harry has a signature 70's style to it) and kind of made the film feel cheaper, but it's got a lot of good story elements.
4. Dead Pool
Just nothing special. The RC car chase was bizarre. The harpoon gun was really silly. The main villain is almost an extra in the film.
5. Enforcer
A very forgettable film. It was too short and I don't even remember the villains or their motivation. Plus, the convenient rocket launcher at the end.

reply

1. Magnum Force; a truly superior sequal, Dirty Harry asks does the end justify the means, Magnum Force asks how far do you go?

2. Dirty Harry; practically rewrote the cop movie in one fell swoop.

3. The Enforcer; good support from Tyne Daley and interesting to see Harry tackle terrorism.

4. Sudden Impact; real step backwards although we do get 'Make my day!'

5. The Dead Pool; weakest of the series although we do get a happy ending for Harry (I figure he married his reporter girlfriend, started a family and retired to become a PI).

IMO

1) Dirty Harry
2) Magnum Force
3) The Dead Pool
4) Sudden Impact
5) The Enforcer

1st) Dirty Harry - the whole plot and suspense twists were great. This was definitely interesting for a 1971 film

2nd) Dead Pool - very entertaining final installment with very underrated supporting actors and actresses. The whole Butcher Hicks plot was funny. Although excessively violent not gory.

3rd) Enforcer - it's a middle of the road film. The plot is OK, it sometimes gets boring, but it has some of the best moments. Harry is very dirty at times.

4th) Sudden Impact - ultra violent and long, it teaches an unpleasant lesson but it is just unpleasant. But Harry's stunts are very well enjoyed especially how he pi$$es the chief off.

5th) Magnum Force - very hard to follow and a plot that just seems unreal. Like the 4th, it is very violent and also long. The gun championship and Harry's stunts though are still like always worth watching.

Despite our sense of "the Dirty Harry series," there is only ONE true classic among them:

The original.

I see this happening with two other classics that got sequels:

Psycho (1960)
Jaws (1975.)

The reason: the originals were each made by a master filmmaker: Hitchcock, Spielberg...Don Siegel. (Yes, Clint Eastwood directed one of the Harry sequels, but not when he was at his best, and the other three sequels were done by journeymen.)

A classic movie -- particularly a BLOCKBUSTER classic movie (Dirty Harry, Psycho, and Jaws all were) is a very rare thing for Hollywood to bring forth. Unique. "Once in a lifetime" stories.

Those movies pulled it off -- but the sequels had none of the craft, "respect" or impact of the originals. Spielberg had no control over the Jaws sequels and they infuriated him so much that he "locked up" sequel rights for all of his later films (like Indy Jones and Jurassic Park -- Spielberg directed some of their sequels himself.)

Good sequels are few and far between -- Godfather II, Aliens, what else?

---

So my ranking is like this:

1. Dirty Harry (the only Dirty Harry movie that matters -- the only true classic.)

Ranking the sequels among themselves:

1. Magnum Force (A rather unnecessary apology for Harry's supposed fascism)
2 The Enforcer (the female partner makes a difference)
3 Sudden Impact (Go ahead make my day" makes history -- but the movie isn't good)
4. The Dead Pool (wiped out at the box office that summer by the bigger and better Die Hard; Harry is given his walking papers.)

Whaddya know? They got worse in order...
