Why are the tapes even in the movie?

They have absolutely nothing to do with the movie or the outcome of the heist or the planning of the heist.

The have literally zero to do with anything that happens. Has Lumet ever commented on this? They don't do anything to stop the heist. They don't do anything after the heist.

It's just a random thing in the movie.

I noticed in the middle of the movie, one of the people doing surveillance identified Sean Connery's character as a unidentified white male. Therefore this told me there was multiple people recording, and it wasn't to follow him particularly.

Yep.
It wasn't to follow him at all. None of them even knew what the other surveillance teams were doing, that is more of the joke.

Ephemeron.
