Doomed to fail from the beginning

CBS may have been hoping lighting would strike twice in the same place when they greenlighted "The New Dick Van Dyke Show" with Dick Van Dyke as the lead and Carl Reiner as the show's creator, but it was not to be. The primary reason was that no matter how good this series was, it would be compared unfavorably with its 1960s predecessor "The Dick Van Dyke Show". Even fifty after it first aired, that series remains one of the top sitcoms ever with near-perfect acting and writing. Not until the 1990s would DVD have another hit series with "Diagnosis: Murder".

We never missed this show at our house. But clearly, lightning did not strike twice!

His co-workers were just not up to the same level as Buddy and Sally. They were good characters but they just suffered in comparison to perfection.

Hope Lange also did not have the same chemistry with Dick van Dyke as Mary Tyler Moore. She had way more chemistry with the ghost of the sea Captain in 'The Ghost and Mrs. Muir'.

The show might have done better if they had not tried to clone the original Dick van Dyke show. It wasn't bad. It was just an imitation of the original.
