The Pernt?

Does somebody up North actually say that stuff (pernt, terlit, etc.), or is it something the Bunker family developed? I've heard Jersey accents, but theirs is a bit unique, and I notice they both have some of it, with Archie being the more extreme, though I hadn't noticed it with anybody else appearing on AITF.

Thanks!

You have to remember - Archie and Edith grew up during the 1930s, so most likely that's how people spoke back then in that vicinity.

reply

Thanks Fletcher!

Hadn't considered that it might be a time thing. They don't have anybody else on there doing that do they? I can almost imagine Barney or somebody talking like that on occasion, but it's probably just imagination.

reply

No, you're right. Barney and others talk like that also. It's always been a mystery, though, why Gloria didn't speak more like Carrie Heffernan.

reply

Simply put, yes. I don't know why and was never able to figure it out, but I believe it's specifically a New York City (note: not New York) quirk.

I live in New York City's suburbs and oddly enough, when I first saw the show as a youngster, I didn't find that aspect unusual at all, since my grandparents, as well as others of that generation, routinely called it the 'terlet' and the 'erl' man.

reply

Pernt. Lol! I love when they talk like that.

"My guts are berlin, Edith".

Get to the pernt! Get to the pernt!

reply

"'Get to the pernt, Edith, get to the pernt.', and then I forget where I was in the story." Something like that.

"And I have to start all over".

reply

Yup. Lol.

Hilarious when she went through writing a whole story on paper because she lost her voice. After Archie finally read through the whole thing, he turns to Edith, asking "But Edith, how does this relate to the question here at hand?". She mouths "What was the question?". He says "How you lost your verse". She gives a silent "Ooooh..." and reaches for the notepad back.

reply

Verse. Lol.

How about "prior-rority"? I've often thought guys like O'Connor and Ken Curtis (Gunsmoke) were probably so good with their characters that they might have done some of that stuff on the fly.

reply

That Festus character is kind of annoying to listen to. I wanna give him Red Bull just to have him perk up his speech rate.

You sure you're not thinking of his predecessor, Chester? Festus is the hillbilly, and can actually be a bit hype.

reply

No, it's Festus. When he's not being hyper, he talks like he's on ludes.

reply

Possibly. O'Connor was great.

reply

Well, Archie Bunker grew up in Queens, so the pernt's well made.
