What country does this take place in?

They said a northern country. I would guess Finland or Norway?

reply

It's left ambiguous by design.

He's taking the knife out of the Cheese!
Do you think he wants some cheese?

The movie seemed to have a very German vibe.

Kind of similar to the original Willy Wonka movie. You can't quite tell where.

Kaiser Wilhelm II

reply

Yes, it makes me think of a northern Germanic country like Denmark or the Netherlands.

Bavaria!?

reply

Bavaria (Bayern) is a Bundesland inside Germany, not a country itself. Seemed more Prussian to me though?

reply

Sombertown

reply

It has no specific place but it is influenced by German and Victorian English culture

reply

Wherever it is you can get to the North Pole without a water break (ocean, sea, etc.) in the land.

it's supposed to be wwII era Germany. Most of the production company for these movies were wwII vets. They wanted to impart their lessons onto the viewing audience

The Vietnam war was still going on....and those people (my parents) were still 'kids' too young to be in charge of television studios and make production decisions.

Oddly w Trump and Putin now in charge the movie is again very timely. Not as dated as it otherwise would be.
