I've read the book, but no, I somehow managed to miss out on the film. Another one to add to my list. I've seen a few of the director George Roy Hill's other films: 'The World According to Garp', 'The Great Waldo Pepper', 'The Sting' and, of course, 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'.

It's an interesting question, Obadiah. In the broadest sense, I guess it's a film that questions the traditional ideals of the Western. A list of revisionist Westerns at Wikipedia does indeed include Open Range; and begins with I Shot Jesse James (1949):

One imdb reviewer says of A Man Called Horse: "You have no idea what effect this movie had on those of us who grew up watching, and loved, 'Westerns'. We had never seen anything like this before. Despite its flaws, it was a revelation and a revolution."
