Somewhat bizarre, but still a good movie
This movie is slightly bizarre and at times even weird, and the payoff isn't very good (the gold salvage plan essentially is a failure), but this movie was fun to watch. The filmed-on-location settings were great, and Burt Reynolds was in his prime and looked great. So did that girl (Miko Mayama) who played Mariko.
Another thing is that the movie piques my interest in the historical basis of the film. Did the Philippine government entrust the U.S. military to hide or safeguard their gold bullion shortly before the Japanese advanced on the Philippines? I wonder where the truth, or gold, lies? This movie clearly warrants further reading.
