If there was a new Dark Shadows movie...

I'd like to hear some suggestions from everyone on who you think would make a good Barnabas. I've heard Johnny Depp suggested a few times. :)

I don't have anyone in mind specifically, but I think it should someone who, like Johnathan Frid, can be handsom and charming and at the same time, frightening and creepy.

Are you sure it isn't time for a colorful metaphor?

I think Johnny Depp or Hugh Jackman could play Barnabas Collins.

In your opinion who could play Angelique? I find her the most differicult to replace, the 1991 actress which I am complete blank could not be as wicked as Lara Parker or as stunningly hypnotic.

At the last two Dark Shadows Festivals that I have been to, Lara Parker said that she would want Charlize Theron if she had a say.

I don't know if it would happen and I doubt Parker would have much say if any. However, I must say that I kind of like that choice.

Thanks,
Amanda

I've been sold on Johnny Depp ever since I read a blurb where he mentioned he loved DS as a kid and wanted to be Barnabas. He's the perfect actor for the role!

My mind won't let me see anyone else but Jonathan Frid as Barnabus. Ben cross was excellent in the miniseries, but it just wasn't the same. Johnny Depp could pull it off, but his recent characters (especially Willy Wonka) seem flat and dull. To me, Barnabus was Frid and Frid was Barnabus. The most critical aspects of Barnabus came from Frid's own shortcomings and personality. If anyone new took the part, they could only put on that which has already been worn. Personally i'm waiting for the official dvd of both House and Night as opposed to a remake.

I whole-heartedly agree with bheck1! Anyone other that Jonathan Frid would immediately suffer from the comparison. The elements combined in just the right way, and I can't see anyone pulling off the "old world gentleman" air Frid had, combined with what you said regarding his shortcomings. Because of the hectic schedule and no re-takes, his nervousness and hesitations with his lines helped portray a man who was terrified of his horrible secret being exposed at any time. It also made a great contrast to those scenes with Julia (and especially Willy!!) when he would suspect betrayal...then he came across as something terrible to behold.
Remakes are pointless and always beg the simple question: why? Why do it? We're lucky to have hundreds of hours of Dark Shadows preserved and I'd rather watch the entire series or the feature films a third time than a crappy remake even once.

I'll entertain a compelling reason for a remake if anyone's got one. CGI bats aren't enough...

just FYI the original is on TCM tonight at midnight (10-20-06) I set my timer already.

Hmmm. Angelique?
Nichole Kidman?
I know she's been used to death but she has the talent ...

If completely COMPLETELY neccesarry to remake Dark Shadows then the best second (for Frid would always be first) could be Alan Rickman. I know, I know he is British, but he could pull off being someone who goes to England a lot. He plays very sad and suffering men (ie Brandon in Sense and Sensability) very well. As Severus Snape in the Harry Potters he also proved that he could play menacing.

I would like to see Jeremy Irons as Barnabus!!!

No disrespect intended to Jeremy Irons (I thought he was BRILLIANT in "Longitude" and "Merchant of Venice").But FULL disrespect intended to people wanting remakes. If we're going to do this, why not just ask for a CGI Barnabus and go the whole hog?

<< If completely COMPLETELY neccesarry to remake Dark Shadows then...>>

I appreciate the sentiment in that you don't think a remake should be made, but the choice of the phrase "if necessary" bothers me: no remake is ever necessary and it never does anything more than insult the original. Where's the necessity in doing that??

Dark Shadows was a show of its time, a time when creators actually had respect for their own material. It was remade in 1991 and already by then it was infested with the garbage of most modern television and films. The 1991 "improvements" included Maggie and Roger having an affair. God knows what "improvements" would be in a 2007 version. I shudder to think...no, I shudder to KNOW that the new dialogue will end up sounding like "Buffy" or "Charmed" or "Desperate Housewives" and the old-world dignity and class that originally made Dark Shadows so good will be lost.
There are plenty of new movies and television series to insult with remakes, and they certainly deserve the insults. Dark Shadows does not.

Jeremy Irons would make a fantastic Barnabas Collins! I agree that a remake is not neccesary but it's fun to specualte. This may sound like a strange choice but how about Bruce Willis as Roger? Remember Willis in DEATH BECOMES HER? I know it's a wierd casting choice but some times those kinds of choices really work. Michael Keaton as Batman comes to mind.

I was just watching King Arthur again and maybe Clive Owen would make a pretty good Barnabas, he was so conflicted as Arthur and he has the right accent to make Barnabas powerful but on the other hand very vulnerable too.

I'm not sold on Joaquin Phoenix. I think he's too much of a pretty boy, though he is a talented actor. He doesn't come close to the quality of say Johnny Depp or Hugh Jackman, let alone Jonathan Frid, who will ALWAYS be the template by which his predecessors have been, and will be judged. I don't completely agree with this either, but my dad suggested Liam Nieson. I know he can be incredibly badass, but that's not necessarily Barnabas. The Barnabas I know could be absolutely terrifying, cruel, and merciless, but he was also incredibly compassionate and guilt ridden, and thats what really made Frid's portrayal so memorable.

To be fair, I think Liam Neason is one of the better suggestions. Frid's Barnabas was rugged, mature and understated, everything which Johnny Depp isn't and Liam Neason is.

Angelique would be hard to cast/ Both Lara Parker and Lysette Anthony had really cute, paedomorphic faces that were not particularly terrifying or overtly 'cool'' or sexy (but beautiful still). People seem to misremember Lara Parker as some sort of vixen but she (like Lysette Antony) had a really sweet, girly face.

I am not sure who I'd cast as Barnabas either. If he could do the right voice, maybe Gabriel Byrne.

I known the remade already made and suck, but should've cast Jason Isaacs or Ralph Fiennes as Barnabas and Charlize Theron as Angelique.
