Andrews--superb. Story--complicated.

So complicated, I turned it off. The best part for me were the cars and planes. Magnificent restoration of
European cars, several varieties, and all running.

Thank you....this is about the only Julie Andrews film I have not seen....have the soundtrack though, so thought I would stop by to see what people thought about it....

Well actually I didn't find it hard to follow what so ever. In my opinion it is a great movie, well worth watching. It is probably my second favourite Julie Andrews movie and believe I've seen many so watch it, you might find that you like it alot. I certainly did.

and anyway... Julie is so marvellous and stunning, probably more so than any of her other movies. =D

I'm sorry to say I found Darling Lili to be a real mess! I felt Julie and Rock Hudson had little to no chemistry, I was not convinced they were in love for a second. I had real difficulty having sympathy for Julie's character or rooting for her at any given moment. I was waiting for the script to develop some greater dimension to the character so I could connect with or at least understand her German spy, but I ended up nearly loathing her (and it is very hard to loathe Julie in virtually anything). The comedy is drastically misplaced; the film doesn't know whether it wants to be serious or comicly irreverent, engaging or occasionally slapstick. There was one moment when it appeared the story might take an interesting turn, when it appears Rock might not be divulging the whole truth, but the story didn't follow through with this angle and instead made Julie out to be a dazed fool as confused as the audience about a secret plot not really worth caring about in the first place. Fabulous production values, but I'm confused as to the values the film conveys in general. Oh, and by the way, in regards to one of the lengthy posts on this board regarding the dissection of Julie's striptease in this movie, might I suggest you spend time fawning over some real nudity in a film beyond the G rating and quit wasting valuable space!

I like ww1 films in the Air; BUT maybe if there were NO music in it like Andrews singing all the time the movie would have been alot better ? anyone agree? best parts for me were the air bsttles and i like the scene with the Germans attack on the train; what was Rick Hudson real mission? jmo

ianharrison04, "a real mess" is what I thought too. After a while I stopped trying to follow the plot, stopped trying to think about WWI's trench warfare, first use of gas, millions dead, and just tried to enjoy the classic old cars and planes.

I saw this movie during its original theatrical release in 1970. I was only sixteen, and had no trouble following the plot. However, I think the version that can be seen today has been re-edited. Perhaps that's caused the problem some people are having.
