Excellent film
I've been a huge Peckinpah fan for years but I've only recently seen "The Ballad Of Cable Hogue".
I have to say that I didn't know what to expect, I'd read the synopsis and analyses in the various biographies/guides, but after viewing "...Hogue" I consider it one of Peckinpah's very best.
The movie moved me in a way I haven't felt in a long time, the funeral at the ending had me in tears. If you know a lot about Sam's personal life and beliefs, you will see his heart and soul laid bare in the character of Cable Hogue. The bittersweet irony of the death of the west and the gradual intrusion of the modern world is perfectly portrayed and coupled with a very poignant and relevant statement on relationships and their sometimes unintentionally destructive consequences.
As good as "The Wild Bunch", it just approaches similar themes from a different angle.
In memory of Sam Peckinpah
