Mary's Many Men (season one)

Okay, she is a good looking woman, single, kind and sweet with a great figure. Of course she'd be dating.

I just bought season one, hadn't seen the episodes in many years and Mary had a number of relationships and a few near misses in the first season alone.

Of course it's not strange that her ex-fiancé would appear in the first episode. But Mary clearly didn't want him back. She seemed sad to say a final" goodbye", but she knew it was for the best.

In the very next episode, Mary and Rhoda invite some men over for drinks. Mary asks Howard Arnell, a man she dated briefly a few years ago. She can't recall why she ended it. But upon seeing Howard, she remembers!

"Too much!" Too much enthusiasm, and affection and hugging. Too much!

A few episodes Mary is interested in Howard's brother Paul (played by the same actor, Richard Schaal). He's a lot different from his manic brother. However Mary finds out that Howard has informed his parents that HE is marrying Mary. They have no idea why she's with Paul.

"Toulouse-Lautrec is One of my Favorite Artists". Mary dates a witty, intelligent author played by Hamilton Camp who is long on charm but short on height. Mary is self conscious about HER height.

"Bob and Rhoda and Teddy and Mary" Rhoda's boyfriend develops romantic feelings for Mary.

"He's All Yours" A young and cute new employee played by Wes Stern develops a thing for Mary. He spreads the word at the station that he and Mary are an "item". Lou Grant, his uncle, has to come to Mary's defense.

"Just a Lunch" Mary is attracted to a globe trotting journalist who used to work at WJM. But he's a real player and married too although he insists that he is "separated". Mary wisely deflects his advances. A handsome Monte Markham plays John Corcoran, the journalist.

Mary's apartment is burglarized twice in "Second Story Story". One of the investigating officers, played by a cute Bob Dishy (I love that guy!) attempts a flirtation while trying to solve the crime.

My favorite is "1040 or Fight". Mary is audited and the IRS agent develops a crush on her. But he's shy and instead of asking her out, he keeps "auditing" her. Paul Sand plays the sweetly shy and funny Robert C. Brand. Never understood why he didn't become a bigger star. He was so cute and a great comedy talent.

In the first season they really wanted to establish that men were going to be hitting on Mary...a lot!

That was a great episode. Rhoda’s reaction, hurt, anger, jealousy was all very believeable and true to her character. Laughing at Mary’s blunder at Teddys.
