Gwangi always looked blue to me!

Anybody else think so and anyone know if the actual miniature was really a different colour?

I have seen some color photos of Gwangi (sitting on a table in Ray's home) and while the model is a bluish gray, it seems that the colors were "pushed" in the timing of the movie (sort of like increasing the color input on your tv set) which would overly display this kind of chroma....you'll notice that some shots of the allosaurus in the film are bluer than others.

The same was done to many of the Dynamation scenes in the 7th Voyage of Sinbad to pull more color into of the shots, making the cyclops sort of orange. (The cyclops was tan flesh color and his leg fur was reddish brown in "puppet" real life.)

Thanks, that explains it then. Looks really blue in some parts!

Actually, during some scenes they changed film stock. I think during the styracosaurus fight sequence you will notice Gwangi actually looks more brown, and the same with the styracosaurus.

lol yes that's what bugged(well maybe that's to strong a word) as well. All the dinosaurs looked blue-ish. It felt unnatural. Still fun film though and a good addition to my giant beasties collection.

If they had lived in the dessert they probably were more brownish as with modern day reptiles.

They point is it looked unnatural. There are indeed brightly colored reptiles but these tend to be more green or red or yellow. Blue is an unusual color in the reptile world.

In the cathedral at the end-Im actually watching it now!-Gwangi is grey.Anybody know if the constant colour changes will be corrected in a Bluray release?

reply

Gwangi looked blue to me, but that never really bothered me. Why should dinosaurs all be grey? Not sure what colour the T-Rex in "King Kong" was as it's in black-and-white. Does anyone know of any colour photographs of the model?

reply

It never bothered me either. in fact because I remember him as blue.......i always want him to be blue.

I kind of hope they aren't corrected. Someone already quoted this below, but here is the quote and the source:

"Gwangi's apparent color changes several times over the course of the movie because there was so much animation to do that Harryhausen did not have enough time to do proper color testing."

It looked greyish blue to me in the non-action scenes. But it was more of an apatite green to me when it was moving about.

until the 80's, most color artwork of dinosaurs showed them as grey or dark green. The famous murals at the New York Museum of Natural History were especially influential. But from the 80's on this notion was discarded and now dinosaurs are often drawn vividly colored and even patterned with stripes or spots. Something was done to the dinos in this film however. They amped up the color somehow and I agree it made them look more like models, not less.
