Animal cruelty?

Does anyone know whether the spider at the beginning was actually killed?

reply

Probably. But it's a spider so who really cares, honestly?

I agree! I know they are God's creatures...but I can't stand them!!! When I saw this at the theatre decades ago...I hollered out loud...just freaked me out to see such an ugly, hairy thing on such a big screen...up close and personal!! So now when I watch this movie, I know exactly when to cover my eyes before it comes up. If it was intentional...I wonder how they were able to time it...get that ugly little crawler in place...and have the horse step on it?

I originally saw this as a young boy. I loved the film, and Clint's others of the period, but that spider shot bothered me.

And to be honest it still does. Its the only thing I don't love about the film. I know I'm being overly sensitive, but it seemed, and seems, unnecessarily, calculatedly cruel.

I'm gonna say no, they wouldn't allow it. In Shawshank Redemption they would not allow a live maggot to be fed to the bird! They had to find dead ones!

The spider and the rattlesnake were really killed. But the world is a better place with one less spider and one less rattlesnake, so no problem.
