Is this the movie where the kid lives in a hollow tree?

I think I have the right movie. I was trying to remember this ... I must have
been 13 years old when it came out, and I loved it. It was at the time so
scientific, almost a manual for how to survive in the wild. I am not sure I
would want to dash to bits all of my fond memories of this very cool movie by
seeing it again ... yet I think I would if I could ever find it.

As I recall the boyu runs away from home with bag full of stuff, and finds
a tree to live it that was hollowed out by fire.

He find a falcon and teaches it to hunt, and finds algae and makes food out
of it. All kinds of cool stuff.

There is a lake or river right by him. Then he has another fire and his
life is ruined or something and he goes home?

I just loved this movie. It this the right one??

Anyone know how it holds up to viewing ... 40 years later? ;-)

Yep! Same movie. Well, it is kind of dated now. Have you read the book? Movie may be available at your local library...

My local video store had this movie now that I remembered the name of it and
just for fun I just rented it. I am watching it now, and it is really pretty
good. Funny, for that time period I think it was over way too many people's
heads ... but I think at least so far that it is really great! I wonder whatever
happened to that kid ... he was a natural, but maybe got typecast as too brainy.
Very orginal and good movie.

if I'm not mistaken, he remained in acting. Seems I've seen his name a few times during movie credits. Never made it really big, however...

It is still a pretty popular kids movie and book...

Ted had a great career as an actor, including many voice roles for Hanna Barbera. He has owned and run many different companies in Hollywood doing mostly film and TV trailers as well as a tremendous number of promos for syndicated television.

I've worked with him personally and he's a real survivor as well as a great talent director, promotions director and really nice guy.

Ted Eccles played a part in "Bad Ronald" (with Scott Jacoby).

He did a few other things, grew up, and got out of the business.
