Interesting Subject in These Objectifying Times

So many people, women and men, using plastic surgery to try and correct what they perceive will make them good looking. The cruel fact of the matter is that the majority of the public are not good looking, they're plain or even homely. There is some grim humor in the film about a somewhat homely girl rejecting the homely boys that her friends and family try to fix her up with. I had a fat girlfriend who always went for the super slim guys and rejected any guys who were chunky (which she was!) As Carrie Fisher, a beauty in her day, said recently, something to the effect that youth and beauty are not accomplishments.

Even if you are born good looking, time has a way of taking care of that advantage! (Except for a rare person such as Isabella Rossellini who has the kind of face that remains beautiful even with wrinkles).

Anyway, I had to watch this movie again as I say farewell to Patty Duke, a terrific actress who was grossly mistreated in her youth but somehow found a way to turn her soul into a thing of beauty. She worked tirelessly and with great kindness to assist those with mental health issues.

It has been said that cleanliness is next to Godliness but I think kindness is closer. It's even better than beauty.

This positively infantile preoccupation with bosoms!Terry-Thomas about US 1963.Hasnt changed much!

Really, which category do you fall in to? What is your point , that we should avoid plastic surgery for the sake of avoiding it? The reality is that looks do matter, and both the inside and outside count, and it's too pat to assume that loving your inside is all it takes. One is not exclusive of the other. Have you written about plastic surgery and womens' objectification on other boards, incidentally? I seem to recall your moniker. It's usually the goodlooking who cite the uselessness of plastic surgery, by the way. But, "Objectifying Times" is now really new

Actually Duke had prosthesis applied to her nose and upper-lip, from what I read to make her less attractive. The only think askew about that is that audiences who are not familiar with the given actor, think that is how they actually look.

Alon, I think her "gross mistreatment" in her youth is exaggerated and not confirmed, since Duke wrote about such mistreatment after her managers were deceased, and her perception, which she has admitted was distorted from the same mental-disease which her comments are about. But this is too threatening for people to consider.

I's nice to know that you practice kindness, and I trust your beauty shines from such.

I just saw the movie, after seeing it on TV as a young girl in the 90's. Despite her insecurities regarding her looks, Natalie was pretty mean sometimes, look how rude she was to the chubby guy at the dance and her uncle. I also felt bad for her boyfriend a little bit, but I understand her reasoning for choosing to break up as well.

I am happy she slapped her best friend's ex boyfriend for being a jerk outside the church of Betty's wedding.
