Has anyone seen this movie?

I really want to know if it's any good because I heard the soundtrack and it moved me.

I've only seen it once on late night TV in the late 70s when I was a kid. What stuck out was the airplane trying to land on the highway scene...it was so cool. And also Alan Delon and the cast dressed in black suit and tie...totally cool. This was years before Reservoir Dogs.

saw the film on the "action" channel. thought it was one of the best crime/heist thrillers i've seen...'til the denouement, which i would rate as one of the worst, contrived endings for a film of this type that i've ever seen. otherwise, i think the rest of the film is classic caper stuff. how wrong could you go with the likes of delon, gabin and venturo in the cast. and, it was made in '69, baby!
especially love the cool morricone-composed music. found myself inadvertantly humming/tapping my fingers along with it (l.o.l.)
i recommend the movie to anybody reading this; although, you decide what you think of the ending.

Yup, one of the best films of this genre ever made, though it does demand strict attention by the viewer.

Perhaps a tad slow-moving by today's standards, but that's not such a bad thing.

-And a note to the younger folks on IMDB: Not a car chase or "shakey cam" scene to be found, yet it still grabs your attention from start to finish.

If you have a multi-region NTSC/PAL DVD player, the Sicilian Clan is available on DVD (PAL, Region Code 2). The UPC Code: 5 039036 034180. I purchased a coopy from Amazon.co/uk. Great movie, but unfortunately the soundtrack is dubbed English. It is, however, it it's original 2.35:1 aspect ratio.

reply

HDVorin,

Are you sure the soundtrack is dubbed English? They shot this movie in three languages, with the actors actually saying the correct words. Bizarre, but it's right there in the trivia section.

In the version I've seen (twice) on US TV, the actors are all clearly speaking English. The syncing isn't the best (done back when they had no digital plugins to help with the looping) so it can almost seem at times like it was dubbed in another language, but it's not.

Since they made a true English version, why on Earth would they also make an English DUBBED version?

reply

The European DVD is indeed the English language version and it's obvious that all the major characters are not dubbed. I believe the confusion arises because some of the secondary characters apparently did not speak English well, and they have indeed been relooped with other actors doing their lines--I suspect that this was to eliminate thick accents.

Le Clan des Siciliens is a masterpiece of storytelling and character development. As others already wrote, acting is fantastic. Delon is likeable, charming and despicable at the same time. Look at Gabin's face when his grandson tells about the adultery. Note LeGoff's chagrin when he has no clue about Sartet anymore.

Just saw it on MAX, it was amazing.

I didn't see it until the mid 70s, when it was rereleased in the wake of "The Godfather." I remember being disappointed at the time because "Godfather" had set a different standard and I wasn't expecting the simpler "heist" film. On retrospect, however, it stands out as a well-made film with lush scenery, excellent music, and good acting.

Am I the only to question how this film got a PG with so much nudity?

Not that I mind of course.

There was no PG-13 back then. There's nudity but nothing sexually explicit.

That's not the point "M" films (That was the first Rating between G & R) almost never had so much nudity

Uh, yes it is the point. This movie was released in the US in 1970. There was no M rating anymore so it was between GP or R for this movie. The MPAA considers whether the nudity is sexually explicit or not. Just showing naked women doesn't automatically qualify for R. Typically, films with nudity have explicit sex so they usually get stronger ratings. But this film doesn't nor does it have profanity or intense violence. It's probably films like this why PG-13 was invented. The rating system is arbitrary anyway and films are handled by a case-by-case basis. They don't say "We gave that film that rating so we must give this film this rating."

The score is the reason I know of the film's existence - I consider it to be one of Morricone's finer works. But, yes, the film is excellent. Sure it shows its age, and it's a poor picture when compare to The Godfather, but nevertheless it's a really well-made crime film on its own accord.

A stunner of a crime film, you will love it. Get the blu ray and watch the international version with the subtitles (if you don’t speak French.) sit back and enjoy a great movie, the likes of which are no longer made!
