The WORST Beatles songs...

The Beatles obviously have a TON of really good songs. But I'm interested in what people think are the worst Beatles songs. I'll start.

1. Good Morning Good Morning
2. Sun King
3. A Taste of Honey

There are two that I can't stand listening to:

Boys
What's the New Mary Jane

I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone mention either of those.

reply

What's the New Mary Jane sure sounds like something that never quite jelled; that was fun doing when one was high, but coming back to it, had to wonder what one was thinking. Still, the Lennon doggerel is enjoyable.

I think cuts 4 to 7 on the White Album are the acme of the guys' most egregious individual aspects - there's Paul's forced cheeriness, John's anvilicious sermonizing, George's admonishing judgementality (yes, that's a word - shut up, spellcheck) - and 'Wild Honey Pie'. This doesn't diminish their contribution to a great album, just displays the warts. IMO, Ringo gets a pass.

reply

I'm one of the biggest fans out there, but here are some of the songs I never quite warmed up to after a quick glance through the discography...

-"Love Me Do" (just too bland)
-"The Long and Winding Road" (I think I've just heard it too much. It's well-written and heart felt, but I just tend to skip over it each time.)
-"Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" (Yeah, it's catchy but also rubbish.)
-about half of the rest of the White Album, to be quite honest... I appreciate the experimentation, but not all of it worked (I did extremely like Back in the USSR, Dear Prudence, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Happiness is a Warm Gun, I'm So Tired, Blackbird, Birthday, Sexy Sadie, Helter Skelter, Revolution I [actually better than the more familiar electric guitar version], and Cry Baby Cry)
-Mr. Moonlight (and actually much of the pre-A Hard Day's Night albums)
-those two weird shorter ones on Let It Be (Dig It and Maggie Mae)
-"We Can Work It Out" is pretty bad
-"A Taste of Honey"... oh dear lord terrible
-"The Word" off of Rubber Soul... and I can only take so much of "Michelle"
-"She's Leaving Home" and "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!" from Sgt. Pepper (though... maybe they're not that bad on second thought)

Everyone saying Good Morning Good Morning, I am the Walrus, Maxwell's Silver Hammer, Sun King, Yellow Submarine, Drive My Car, Helter Skelter, and Penny Lane (I think there was someone who dared mention Dear Prudence as well... :O) is totally nuts. Hey Bulldog is also quite underrated. I'm also a big fan of the East Indian-ish songs.

"Rocky Raccoon" and "Revolution 9" (If you can even call that a song... I guess not. Even John Lennon himself called it a "montage"). Those are the ones that spring immediately to mind.

With A Little Help From My Friends

Disagree with 1 and 2 entirely. I don't care for Sun King, but its not nearly the worst. Good Morning Good Morning is in my top 20! A Taste Of Honey is pretty bad, but they didn't write it, so I can't complain.

Anybody who says that there's no such thing as a bad Beatles song obviously hasn't heard them all, and have heard the classics "Hey Jude" or "Let It Be", and thinking that such a serious band couldn't have their bad moments. Don't get my wrong, The Beatles are my favorite band, but I'm not going to pretend they don't have any bad songs.

Now, that being said, here is my top 10 worst beatles songs list. The list wouldn't include covers, as the entire Beatles For Sale (save for a few songs) would most likely being up there. I also saw Mr Moonlight listed a lot. Its a pretty horrid song, but John's vocals saves it from being on my worst list (plus its a cover, so its not eligible anyway.)

I'm also not including Revolution 9, because its less of a song than an experimentation with sound. Also not Wild Honey Pie, because that isn't a song.

10. I Want You (She's So Heavy)

--What saves this from being lower is the guitar riff, which is decent enough. However, the song drags for over 7 minutes, over half being that same dull monotone "She's So Heavy" riff over and over. The song also feels like it stayed back in the 60's, if you follow me. Most Beatles songs transcribe to present day well, but this doesn't. Also, the lyrics are God-Awful. Only 16 original words in the entire song.--

9. Why Don't We Do it In The Road?

--Pretty self explanatory. Would have been lower, but its a fairly fun song.--

8. Doctor Robert

7. Blue Jay Way

--"Please Don't Be Long" x 500--

6. Yer Blues

5. And I Love Her

--Some love this song. Some hate it. Im for the latter. Schmaltzy lyrics, even for an early beatles song, on top of a overly predictable guitar riff which is boring. Looking back, the lyrics also SUCK entirely.--

4. Don't Pass Me By

--Ringo...--

3. Flying

2. Honey Pie

--Take and I love her, cheese the lyrics up by 50 times, add a generic piano riff and some of the most over the top, schmaltzy as hell vocals, and you have this song. --

1. The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill/ Rocky Racoon (TIE)

--WTF is this crap??--

no sir, its my second favorite actually.

Covlat, I actually really like all 10 (oops, make that 11) of your worst songs. On the other hand, I also like "Good Morning, Good Morning;" it has become my two-year old grandson's favorite song, probably because of the animal sound effects.

reply

I love Good Morning Good Morning too!

And the thing is, my (11) worst songs are actually GOOD. The thing is, they are my least favorite beatles songs, if you follow me. They had so many good songs, and my least favorite ones are actually still good.

Crikey - Flying turned up a lot here. Oddly enough it's a song I didn't like that much for a long while. However, I've been listening to it loads this week and think it's superb. Just a simple 12-bar blues standard done in the Beatles style. The rhythm section work well on it...

reply

I'm a little mystified by the hatred for "Flying," as well. Entertainment Weekly rated it one of the five worst Beatles songs. Call me crazy, but I think the bass guitar lick is one of Paul's all-time best.

There is an entire plane of Hell reserved for people who hate Flying. Enjoy your eternity of torment, tasteless clods!

reply

About Flying, like practically all of the Magical Mystery Tour songs (just to brag, I have both the original MM Double-EP, and the American album (1969, near mint), and I think Flying is a nice psychedelic tune. Hello, Goodbye and All You Need Is Love I like less.

It's a shame that practically always when I talk about music with people, and The Beatles come up, they don't seems to know the Beatles well, and the three songs that seem to be the most famous and they always know, are the songs that I consider among the weakest...

Yesterday, yeah, sorry, eventhough I know it was quite groundbreaking back then; I think it's a bit kitschy.
All You Need Is Love, eventhough I can quite dig it for being a Beatles 'anthem', and the 'She Loves You'-ending is a quite nice little touch.
Let It Be, the album version, the single version is way better, less Spectory, and a bit of a gospel song about the bands' own ending, and because of that quite touching, eventhough a bit corny.

...and hence people look at me with a bit of a frown when I say The Beatles are my favorite band. Then I explain a lot of their best songs were on their albums or lesser known singles etc. Then I like to say "okay, let's listen to this modern remix of a Beatles song", especially to people who like electronic music/ techno, and play Tomorrow Nevet Knows and afterwards say it's not a remix at all, but an original 1966 song. People tend to be quite amzed. You should try it sometimes :)

My least favorites:

Dig It
Maggie Mae
All Together Now
Hello, Goodbye
The Long And Winding Road

Can't think of many more, what amazes me about The Beatles is the diversity and consistant (sp?) quality of their music.

Don't Pass Me By

The lyric "you were in a car crash and you lost your hair" alone deserves this right. Where does Ringo come up with stuff like that?

Incidentally you can't really count any covers as "bad" Beatles songs cause they didn't write them

Let It Be. /thread

It seems I'm a little late to this party. My least favorite Beatles' tune is "The Long and Winding Road." Especially the Spector produced version on the 1970 released Let It Be. The "wall of sound" is just awful. It sounds like it belongs in a bad Disney cartoon movie. Paul doing it solo and the Let It Be...Naked version take away a little bit of the sting, but it's still nothing great.

reply

I don't care for that version of "The Long & Winding Road" either. The production and the female chorus do nothing but emphasize the listlessness in Paul's voice. He sounds like he's really tired.
