Which side was worse?

Does anybody get the feeling that, atleast in this version, the Capulets were the more of the "bad guys". Not only do that try to start a fight by thumb biting but they kick down a poor old man. Also when Old Capulet runs out in the opening brawl, he looks like he's in bloodlust while old Montague looked more like a solider going off to defend his country (with the way he tends to the injured man and having to tell his wife "hold me not"). It also doesn't help that the embodiment of hate in the film is Tybalt while Benvilio is the peacemaker.

Well to address your thoughts, it's important to know the history of the families, then it makes sense.
The Capulets were wealthy, yes, and so were the Montagues.
But the Capulets were "new money" - they were much more flashy with their
wealth, and their clothes were likewise bright and colorful.
They were a much more loud and boisterous bunch.
That's why old Capulet goes charging out to fight, and even his
wife says her peace after Tybalt gets killed.

The Montagues were old money, and a much more serene family.
In the film their costumes are much more subtle colors.
Romeo's parents are very warm and understanding of his gentle
nature. (In the story, Romeo's mother dies of a broken heart
because he is banished -- she is a tender soul)
And yes, Montague is like an old soldier defending his honor,
his country during the fight, because his family has held firm
for a long time.
Benvolio is indeed a neutral character, always trying to lay low
and keep the peace. And Tybalt is the antagonist in the story.

I believe the Capulets were worse. It may just be that we see a lot more of them than we do the Montagues, but it's easy to imagine that family senseless fighting with another one given the way the heads of the family treated their own daughter.

In my opinion, the Montagues treated Romeo that way because he was a young man, and could be trusted with finding his own way on his own, instead of being told what to do all the time like the Capulets do with Juliet.

To answer the question, the Capulets are certainly shown to be worse, even though Lord Capulet kept his cool during the party.

I think that both sides were just as brutal and cruel. I think their hatred for one another is equal, and so is the senseless violence they employ.
