STUPIDEST MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN!

HELL IN THE PACIFIC. (SUMMARY)

Japenese and american pilot trapped on remote island. Japenese pilot captiors american. american escapes. captures japanese then lets loose. they build raft. sail to island. find abandoned american camp. japanese reads life magazine. gets pissed off. american gets pissed off. bomb blows them up. THE END.

there, in 5 seconds that is the movie.

I only finished watching the movie because usually there is something in the end that makes the body of the story come together and make sense. This movie is the boggest waste of time. I dont know what was going through the directors head when he made this but im sure one of his close relatives/friends had recently died or something.

This is a film about stupidity of HUMAN NATURE, which is cause of war, not consequence. The movie and the end are a little sample of the humankind behavior. Two men, two tribe or two nations live and die in conflict. The mankind life in the earth for only, optimistically talking, 1 million years in 4,5 billions of earth existence ( in a "movie scale" this is about 1.5 s).

This film is a wonderful metaphor about our short and repetitive history. Nearness, distrust, necessity, cooperation, distrust, conflict; nearness, distrust, necessity, cooperation, distrust, conflict, and so on...( in ten words and 2 second, the Man history in earth).

Then Man is a species that not self-destroyed. Yet. But will do it. Many, many times. Will not be self-extinguished, but darwinistic depuration is in beginning.

I liked it very much, except the end, indeed.

reply

yes, it is a very good film; as for the end - they lost temper because of war and it is the war which killed them. Really the end was sudden and unexpected.

reply

Hi, yes that's also how I understood it actually. It's a bit of a guess game, as it all happens so fast.

reply

I didn't like the movie either.
it's supposed to be good: language barrier brings a good friendship.
But the ending is just not right. it's pointless.

I'm going to have to agree with the original poster.

We screened this tonight at my film school, and we all felt like we were being set up for the most ridiculous ending ever.
Yes, life is random with plenty of random moments, but it seemed like the writer did not quite know how to end this film so they get blown up.

I mean, even during the explosion, we were sitting there joking saying, "And then they die, The End!", only to find out two seconds later that WAS how it ended. After the time we invested watching these two guys bitch at each other, become friends, and then build up to this intense moment, it just ends?

The point I think the original poster was making, was that he/she was expecting a bigger payoff for the time they spent on these characters. It's a little insulting.

If you guys would stop picking apart someone else's grammar and spelling and actually pay attention to what they're saying and respect that others will have opinions different than yours (without insulting their taste), you won't look like the more ignorant (and elitist) schmuck.

Welcome to IMDB.

It's kind of a strange forum. To get some idea where the original poster dieing 4life was coming from -- previously having discovered a large number of posters are high schoolers -- I went to his profile and looked at his other messages. What other kinds of films did he like did he find stupid? I discovered there were no other messages. He only posted the two messages in this forum. He hasn't been back in five years.

Was his post a prank? Just a kid being mindless? Hoping to upset the macho adult men who (he would probably think) absolutely love this film? We'll never know I guess.

I don't really agree with you and your film school pals, crocetti. That the ending isn't the big payoff we moviegoers have a right to expect having invested time and brain cells into following the film. As with so many films, I think you have to understand the context. What may seem contrived now -- in 2010 -- may not have seemed contrived in 1968.

Hell in the Pacific came out at the height of the Viet-Nam War (which I fought both in and against). I felt it was an anti-war film when I first saw it, and a very intelligent one at that. There was also the anti-Asian sentiments alive in the US in the late 60s (also because of the war) which I also felt the film explored.

Japanese people during WWII were absolutely despised here in the USA. The idea that a gruff character like Lee Marvin would have to overcome his fear and loathing of the Japanese soldier (or airman) to survive added a lot of tension to the film I thought.

As for the ending, despite it being imposed on the production by the studio, I thought it was the perfect ending. That it had to end that way actually.

What was the other or original ending? Anyone know?

I think your name should be "dying" buddy. Fix that and start over at the top

I think it's pretty funny how people here overanalyze the ending, proclaiming that they "get it" by elaborating on what the creators of the film must have meant, when the trivia section reads:

"The studio didn't like the original ending, so they used a scene of an explosion from the Peter Sellers film The Party (1968)."

reply

And why does re-using second hand footage, in principle, make it impervious to analysis?

I was curious about the above poster and looked up his last few messages. I discovered almost every one is a rant against some other person who posted a message. Except....

He is absolutely bonkers over Jessica Biel and he was in total agreement with one poster who suggested beating up your wife or girl friend is really cool.

Other than those two messages all the others were basically name calling. ("Moron" seems to be his fave.)

But! He hasn't posted in five months. Maybe he's gone. YAY!!!!

This is an odd one. According to this person's profile, he registered his account on IMDb on Aug 3 2012 and the last time he was active was on Aug 3 2012. He's never posted another message, just the one quoted above. It never seemed clear exactly who he was responding to.

The person, dieing_4life, who started this thread (STUPIDEST MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN!) also has an odd IMDb history. According to their profile they only posted two messages. One starting this thread and another one six days later, explaining why he thought the movie was so stupid. His messages were actually fairly literate and rational. It's just the subject line he chose seems very immature. He also has not been active since he posted the second message on Jul 8 2005. That's over seven years ago.

But his thread lives on!
