How was the "rag doll" dance scene from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang filmed?

I know Dick Van Dyke was on a wire but how did they edit it out so well compared to the earlier crappy green screen in the film. Also is he meant to look like he's on a wire to the people in the castle or is it meant to look like he was actually doing it?

He was on a wire? What does that mean? That other men were pulling him around?

When I watched the film, I thought he was on stilts and that he was doing everything himself.

But if other men were pulling him around on wires, then that is much less impressive.

I'm not sure what "on a wire" means though, so if it doesn't mean other men were pulling him around, please correct me and tell me what it does mean.

Agreed a couple of times a wire had to be used but incredibly well disguised, and the switches from the parts done with wires to the parts done by himself were well accomplished. I think it was supposed to be like the "I Got No Strings" number in Pinocchio[/i]. It made me think of the scene in [i[Escape to Witch Mountain when Tia made the puppets dance, the director explained in the DVD commentary that the puppet wires were painted the same color as the background. Things such as Tony's harmonica levitating were also done with wires.
