Possible meaning

Just finished rewatching it (never read the book btw) here are my thoughts:
Candy is an innocent continually seduced throughout by means of, romanticism,(Burton), patriotism (Matthau), profesionalism (Coburn), mysticism (Brando), just to name the isms (there is also bullying, sympathy, promise of fame etc.).
The institutions on which every society is based are an illusion, and are used for men to seduce women. Just a thought on a possible interpretation.

I think that's exactly one of the things Southern intended with the book, which you should by all means read. It's a takeoff on Voltaire's Candide which should give you some idea.

I think it's a good interpretation, but the movie's too wacky and dull to give much deep thought.
