overrated

Watched this movie last night. Long, slow and pointless. Even the car chase was over rated. Disappointing use of my DVR. Mc queen was great in The Great Escape but this one fell flat for me.

I couldn't disagree with you more. Steve McQueen was great in this as a completely dedicated detective who is always focused on the objective. He's soft-spoken and underplays the part with great effectiveness. AND, the car chase scene between the built Mustang and the romping/stomping Dodge Charger is an absolute classic! One of the greatest chases in motion picture history. One of my all-time great films.

I agree with chuko. I saw this in a theater and in my opinion that is the way this film should be viewed and critiqued. No home television does the chase justice. The chase was very effective. I think McQueen was perfect the way his role was scripted. Maybe Paul Newman ? (he knew how to drive race cars and his "Harper" persona may have fit Frank Bullitt. Who knows? I still enjoy the film. Bill Hickman? A great driver in his own right.

there is no such thing as an over rating. A rating is what it is, in IMDB's case, it's an average of all it's users who cared to rate it, no more, no less. It does not show a truth of what the movie is, but it also does not lie, IMDB believes, in average, that Bullit is a 7.5 star movie. Which may agree or not with what you think, but honestly who cares about that? Just watched Guardians of the Galaxy and saw it pulled an 8.2. We leave in this world, don't hate it, accept it.
People will rate, stars will average. You can either feel identified or different.
No need to change anybody's mind.

reply

I don't think he was talking about the IMDB rating but its "popular rating". People hype Bullitt.

reply

isn't it the exact same thing?

reply

It isn't, you say something is overrated when people talk about it as if it was a masterpiece when it clearly isn't.

reply

Masterpiece: a work of outstanding artistry, skill, or workmanship.

Outstanding: exceptionally good.

Good: having the required qualities; of a high standard.

Standard: something used as a measure, norm, or model in comparative evaluations.

Unless there is an "universal movie quality criteria" that I'm not aware of, I think saying something is a masterpiece is just as valid as saying it's not.
You can't wrong opinions that are based on a subject's appreciation. We are all different, and we like different stuff.. which I find rather cool, in contrast to this thread, that is ultimately useless... but hey, that's just my opinion :)

Just watched it, couldn't agree more. I was expecting a great movie but it was rather bland. Very little action, no suspense even if it tries, because it doesn't manage to make you care about the crimes. The chase itself is pretty overrated too. Some films from that era are much better, to name two with cars, Vanishing Point and The Italian Job. Any spaghetti western with Clint Eastwood is better too. And neither of those gets the hype Bullitt gets.

I was born in 73 but never got around to watching this until about 5 years ago, thought it was good but slow and did seem a little pointless. I know movie making was different back then and I just watched it again and seemed to enjoy it better the 2nd time. I do think it's very good for a 60's movie. It's just one that I wouldn't go back and watch over and over, it doesn't make my favorites list. Lol

I have to agree - it started out amazingly (I loved the stylish opening credits) and was good for about an hour or less, then got less and less interesting. By the end, my mind was wandering all over the place.

I saw it in the theater when it came out. I did not know what it was about, and I thought I might see something else because the title was weird. But I saw it, and it was astonishing. Never forgot the experience. Back then the producers had no idea it'd be replayed on smaller screens than black and white television. Or that the world and its attitude would change, or that there'd be trolls looking for attention:) So I can't say you're "overrated" remark is valid considering the subject matter is now take. So wildly our of its original context.

Your clueless go watch the horrible actors of today! This movie is a cult classic! Get real please!

I agree about this movie being overrated. When people remember a movie more for a car chase scene than the characters or storyline, that tells you something. It's a dull, plodding mess, a half hour Dragnet special dragged out to the length of a motion picture, and with all the pacing of paint drying. The only good thing I can say in its favor is that it laid the groundwork for movies like Dirty Harry and The French Connection.

As a sidenote, I remember ages ago getting into a debate with someone about this and the other person was like, "No, you don't get it--movies were slower paced back then."

Uh, no. Even for a 1960s movie, Bullitt is plodding and could've benefitted from tighter editing.
