What's so terrible about it?

What's so terrible about this film? Does everyone have to agree with the critics? The scene in which Valerio shouts "Pity? Pity? I love you! I love you!" made me cry. The script is believable. The performances are fine. The music is beautiful. The only stupid thing about this film is Caroline Mortimer, who - with her positively terrible teeth, plays Maggie, who is clearly supposed to be a very rich and elegant woman. Now that's ridiculous! But no critic I've read mentioned this.

I wouldn't worry about the Medved judgement. He was a novelty book writer of the school that thinks its cool to say clever and snarky things about films that have no defenders. Its not the quality of the film but the opportunity to write amusingly about it that determines what's "worst". Its not a coincidence that his brother has ridden his association with his brother's books to a career reviewing films using a right wing political bias so its no doubt that is why they consider Ivan the Terrible among the "worst". They also called composer Vernon Duke a "hack" (article on Goldwyn Follies). Neither of the Medved brother has a background in cinema studies but they sort of backed into it with their novelty books.

I think Faye Dunaway is hilariously bad, I mean, she is seriously awful to the point the more melodramatically she shouts out her dialogue, the more I want to laugh. But that's one of the charms of this movie, among many others, including scenery, fashion, set decor....I laugh, but I love it, too. (and I did notice that woman with the appalling teeth earlier!)....I am so old I worked at the theater when this movie first came out. It did extremely poor business, but I got to watch it quite a few times waiting for customers to drift in.

It certainly is not as bad as its reputation- I saw it in Italian w/subs- perhaps that improved it some. Films like this one just work better in a foreign language. If you enjoyed it in English I highly reccomend you get the
Italian version.

Dunaway was red-hot at this time, so I really looked forward to this movie, but I found it slow-moving and dreary.

I really liked it. Dunaway & Mastroianni are gorgeous and had lots of chemistry. Dunaway's wardrobe, the sets and Italian scenery are fabulous. The story itself is good: very sweet & sentimental. Wonderful soundtrack, with Ella Fitzgerald singing the theme song. It's unfair & wrong that someone deemed to include this film among ""The Fifty Worst Films of All Time".

This is a movie you can sit back and imagine....
