Never Saw This Show

This show started when I was 18 and ended when I was 23, and I'm sorry to say that I never saw it, none of it, not a scene, nothing. TV generally was so bad during those years that I gave it up to do other things. And I wasn't even really aware Doris Day had a sitcom for those 5 years.

Don't know why you'd say TV was bad back then.

Think it's any better now?

Because it was. By the late 60's they'd run out of ideas for both dramas and sitcoms. The older generation that had pioneered television was aging. Plus, there were only three networks, which meant only 3 channels (CBS, NBC, and ABC), and so there was no variety to choose from.

Actually, it is. Thanks to the development of cable dramas beginning with The Sopranos in 1999, all the way through Six Feet Under, Dexter, Breaking Bad, etc., and how such programming has affected all of television.

I agree that the 68-73 era was a terrible time for TV. The holdover shows from the 50's were long gone and silly fish-out-of-water shows were long in the tooth. The new era of TV slowly got off the ground with hits like All in the Family, Happy Days, The Bob Newhart and The Mary Tyler Moore Show, but besides The Carol Burnett Show and maybe That Girl, there weren't many good shows between '68 and the early 70's.

The only time period that rivals its dismal entertainment value would be the late 70's- early 80's, the mid-90's and the mid 00's to today. If it weren't for Antenna, METV and Decades, I'd sell my tv.

Fun article about the series' annual storyline reboots. Basically, Doris had no fucks to give.

She was conscripted into doing the show behind her back by her late husband after he pissed their money away—she found out just a few weeks before filming began. Plus, she was given full creative control, so she got to change the storylines to her liking. After the fifth season, she walked away, having fulfilled her contractual obligations.
