On Her Majesty's Secret Service

On Her Majesty's Secret Service, every time!

I rewatched YOLT again this evening only through sheer laziness and not trying hard enough to find something else.

Although it was spectacular, the volcano set, John Barry's music and the lovely Japanese locations were all plus points. Unfortunately Connery lets the side down. You can see that he is just going through the motions at this point. Thank God he didn't get a chance to ruin OHMSS! And don't get me started about Diamonds are Forever!

YOLT is good because he does do some spy action. But Connery looks bored. Sadly once Aki goes, the movie kinda goes downhill. (But that volcano base! Wow what a set!)

Akiko, Mie Hama, and Karin Dor have got to be one of the best trifectas in James Bond.

OHMSS is more back to basics. And for a first timer Lazenby isn't bad. I also just can't picture Connery doing the ending.

OHMSS wins for me. But Diamonds Are Forever. Yuck.

Fleming used to have a saying along the the lines of "Things may be implausible but they must never be impossible" YOLT is the first film that ignores that and takes Bond into fantasy. Add to that all the plot holes and Connery's obvious boredom make this one of his weakest.

OHMSS is far superior, in my view. A much more plausible story, the classiest leading lady, a Blofeld with physical presence, terrific fight scenes, spectacular skiing scenes and one of John Barry's greatest scores, the menace of the title music and the beauty of All The Time... OK, Lazenby isn't great but he brings a much needed touch of vulnerabilty. He looks scared after the ski run and he absolutely nails the final scene,

I enjoy both , for different reasons.

YOLT is one of the best silly, fun, over the top Bond movies.

OHMSS one of the best , more serious, Fleming, Bond movies

reply

Both YOLT and OHMSS over DAF, which may be one of my least favourite movies in the whole series.
