Audrey a bit old?

Although I think it's a fine movie, it's a bit of a stretch picturing Audrey Hepburn as the virginal young thing she's supposed to be in the early flashbacks. After all, she was 38 when the movie was made. Jackie Bisset [in the choir] was 15 years her junior.
Then again, she looked fine as the older Joanna, and I guess you can't have it both ways. A very nice performance no matter her age.

Audrey looked way younger than 38 in this movie.

Respectfully, I do disagree (and agree with those who thought she looked fine even as the younger Joanna). Hepburn had an ageless quality until she was at least 40, and with the makeup and hairstyles (and her natural bone-thinness), she looked great as the younger Joanna. Her face also didn't seem particularly lined for a woman in early middle age. And as others have noted, this allowed her to play the older versions of the character flawlessly, providing just the right emotion for each scene in the "red car" and "white Mercedes" scenes.

When she took that long hiatus from acting until 1976 and returned in "Robin and Marian," that's when you begin to see her looking somewhat aged (by that time she was nearly 50). But in 1966-1967 when this would have been filmed, she still looked youthful and vivacious for the "meet cute" and courtship scenes. (She conveyed a similar youthfulness in How to Steal a Million made about this same time.)
