Finney was way too old for this part.

He looked too old even in the scenes from the present. Don't get me wrong, he is a fabulous actor. However, he is simply not attractive or sexy AND he looked too old opposite Audrey Hepburn.

I believe Albert Finney was 8 years younger than Audrey Hepburn.

You're only off by one year; Hepburn was born on May 4, 1929, making her 7 years older than Albert Finney (who was born on May 9, 1936).

They both celebrated birthdays during production on this film; Hepburn went from 36 to 37, while Finney went from 29 to 30. I've come across comments stating that Hepburn was too old for her role (passport photos indicate Joanna is 18 as the story begins), but I don't agree; Hepburn was one of those rare human beings who looked a good deal younger than she actually was. She'd been a dancer in her early years and knew exactly how to use movement & energy to suggest youthfulness.

But this is the first time I've ever encountered someone who felt Finney was too old to play Mark. The character goes from age 21 to age 33 in the story, so it's more than a little absurd to say that an actor in the 29/30 age range was "way too old" to play him - especially someone as fit & robust as Finney.
