Although the film clearly had an eye on the US market- given the name American actors in the cast- where chances are the majority of people wouldn't have known how much £5 was in 1968.
shareI think Americans in the past knew the pound had a high value. In the old days, the British ordinarily dealt in shillings. Like in The House That Dripped Blood (1971), Jon Pertwee buys a vampire costume for 13 shillings.
Five dollars might have been a big deal in the 1960's too. In Caddyshack (1980), they argue about 50 cents for a coke. Still, five dollars adjusted was inflation was roughly 43 dollars today, so not as steep.
