Anne Bancroft was 36 in this film?!

She looked much older, I assumed she was in her late 50s..

reply

i'm almost 36 now and i think she looks great. while i can agree she might be believed to be older than 36 she certainly doesn't look late 50's in this movie.

Her style(hair, clothing, etc.)in the film was that of a suburban woman of the era in her late 40s to 50s. Ms. Bancroft was much more attractive and youthful in real life (at the time)than she was made to appear on screen. This had to be done as she was in reality only a few years older than Dustin Hoffman and Katherine Ross.

I agree with Goodfold...older than 36 but no way in her 50s! Maybe her early 40s? I too read they used makeup to make her look older than the 6 to 8 year gap between her and the young people. Her clothing also makes her body appear older--buff, but older. When I was a teenager, I thought she was older as well tho. Live and learn.

They tell your her age, within a few years, in the movie.

She left college when she got pregnant with Elaine (Mr. Robinson was in law school, she was in college). Elaine is about Ben's age now. He turns 21 in the course of the movie. That makes Ms. Robinson around 41 or so.

This is also consistent with her line saying she is "twice as old" as Benjamin. Though that might not be literally true - it's often used as a loose expression, sometimes in a hyperbolic way - in this case it's pretty close to exactly right.

Looking older than her age makes it more believable. What matters is, she looks great.

You want something corny? You got it!

I think her attitude made her seem much older.

You are so right! She was so hardened and bitter...also, excessive alcohol has an aging effect, especially on women. She just came across as so desperate and unhappy, it aged her, perfect, of course for the character. Bancroft was awesome.

late 50's? If you look, she has no visible lines, no sagging, etc. I think she looked 36 and not made to look old enough. They used little aging make-up on her. She seemed older from being a fine actress, and the fact that she has always had a older demeanor about her (ref: The Miracle Worker, age 31)

Late 50s is clearly an exaggeration of the OP but so is looking 36, she looked like someone in her mid to late 40s.

reply

Are you all having trouble with arithmetic?

Perhaps the OP just wants to reach out for some sense of community.

reply

Late 50's?  Not even close. Personally I thought she looked her real age. Hoffman had such a boyish face that it made him seem younger.
