Pretty Messed up Family

I've been watching this show alot on the Boomerang Network. I noticed that Zandor and Tara are husband and Wife( according to the opening credit's narration). and Dorno is their son yet they never EVER show affection to one another. I never see Zandor and Tara show love to one another and Dorno doesn't even call them "Mom" and "dad" he calls them by their names. what's up with that? do they not believe in the "Nuclear Family" in outer space? Are they too hardened from battles to show any sort of emotions outwardly? I've seen them show more affection towards Gloop and Gleep than to each other. Any thoughts?

I always assumed different world different forms of respect. For example although Dorno calls his parents be his given names he's by and large obedient to their wishes and on more than one occasion risked danger to get one or both parents out of a jam.

But I've never even seen Zandor Kiss Tara.

I did see him kiss Gloop once...Or was it Gleep?

reply

In one episode, a bad guy refers to Tara as "Zandor's concubine".

Maybe it was a shotgun (slingshot shotgun?) wedding?

reply

oooh that opens up a whole new area of discussion.

Zandor must have odne something since they had Dorno.

reply

Yea, I've always thought Dorno has some kinda Oedipal thing going on, too.

"Our Lady of Blessed Acceleration, don't fail us now!"

reply

Maybe Dorno was adopted.

The way that they drew Tarra, any intimacy Zandor had in mind would be too hott for Saturday morning tv!!

The culture outside of the earth could be much different. They never tell exactly where they are from , though.

reply

Yes. Not every place in the Universe is going to be late 20th Century, early 21st Century suburban America. Different worlds, different ways. Different doesn't have to be "pretty messed up."

Well, consider that this is an action sci-fi cartoon where the main focus is on the adventures that the family encounters and how they must cooperatively battle various nemesis with the help of their animal cohorts, not on personal relationships. IMHO, perhaps in the planet Quasar, the concept of showing affection is vastly different to our own earthly perception. In the later 80's episodes, Dorno does address Zandor and Tara as Dad and Mom. In the Purple Menace episode (No. 40) the ending shows Zandor and Tara holding hands as they watch the sunset. So my reply to this thread is, yes, they are a nuclear family, albeit in an interstellar way.

reply

Actually, in one episode Dorno DID call his father Dad.
