Was he too old to play the lead in this?

Johnny Cash was not in this. Waylon Jennings had the lead role.

Thank you. My question (which obviously wasn't clear enough) was: Was the reason Waylon was cast in the lead and not Johnny Cash because Cash was already too old for the role?

Waylon probably came cheaper at that point in his career. He had only released two albums at that point and was just beginning to get noticed.
