I remember seeing an old Claudette Colbert movie on TCM recently (Remember the Day) in which Colbert plays a schoolteacher at the turn of the (20th)
century. I was more than a wee bit surprised when her students recited the Pledge of Allegiance by holding their arms in what appeared to be a Nazi salute! (Apparently that was the correct way to recite the Pledge in pre-WWII days).
