Perhaps the most sexist production of the 60's ...

We saw it in Play-form last night. Songs like, "Everybody needs a maid" ... "To Jiggle" ... "To Giggle" ... "To Wiggle" .... were truly horrific, although they elicited a lot of laughs, due to the effeminate acting that went with the song.

All the women's roles were visual (showing off their sexuality) and superficial. No woman in this play had more than 15 lines!

It was well produced and there were some funny lines, but the sexism was constant (I'm a 53-yr old male and it made me uncomfortable). When the men weren't talking about the younger women they were ape'ing all women.

How about this humorous sub-plot trajectory? My lord how awful it was to be married for 30 years to an older woman, how can i get rid of her! How many times have I seen that before? Oh, only about ... 50,000 !!

The audience did laugh a fair amount, mostly to the sondheim numbers, but I assume it's because it was an audience made up mostly of people in the late 50's, 60's, and 70's, from a more sexist era. This piece of theater is something from the 60's that definitely should be forgotten.

Don't tell that to WHoopi GOldberg, who on Broadway, played ....

Pseudolus!

Or to the countless other females who have played the role in school and amateur productions.

You do realize that this play is based almost entirely on ancient Roman theatre, right?

The characters and plot lines are very slightly modernised versions of roman stock characters (the nagging old wife, the wily slave, the prostitute, the boastful soldier, etc) and stories.

So any sexism you perceived in this play was not necessarily a product of the 60s, and likewise an audience member doesn't have to be from the 60s to find it funny. They just need to make sure they dislodged the stick from their butt before attending the production.

You always had the option to get up and leave, of course, due to your discomfort.

I just love it when a wonderful movie musical like this one, that was made in the mid 1960s, and was based on an award winning play, is viewed by the political correctness of the 21st Century. Take it for what it is; entertainment.

I thought "gillies"' comments re: sexism were extrememly comical. Don't forget, gillies, the setting of the film is ancient Rome. People were sexist back then. Would you want history to be completely re-written, so that modern
feminazis can be pandered to? You're brainwashed.
