Nightclub scene, was this ever a thing?

One of those 'what the hell?' moments for me is where Michael, Carol, and her folks are at a nightclub, everyone's dancing and clapping, and the lights go out and everyone falls into a pile. This movie was before my time by about a decade, and this sort of thing never happened in any clubs I got to. Don't know if I should be relieved or jealous.

There is a Greek Orthodox Church in my town that has a big festival once a year. They sell spaghetti dinners, and lots of beer and wine and ouzo shots.

The dancing is just like that. The dancers all hold hands and make a rope line, and dance though the room, with dozens of people the speed can get out of control, and depending on how sober they are they can collapse just like that. I think Italians do the same sort of thing.
