How do you feel about the film being in black and white?

The director chose to shoot the film in black and white even though colour was widely available. How did this effect the way you viewed the film? Do you think it necessary? Was the metaphor too heavy-handed or was it complimentary to the film's message? Did it hinder or enhance the way you viewed the film?
