201 people gave this a 1!
As of today, 201 people have rated this a 1, almost 10% of all votes cast! All I can say is: Shame on you.

shareI am from Thailand and have been observing the general vote of this film for 2 years since it was rated above 9.0. And then, the rate seems to have losed its energy day by day.
But, I really love this movie so much.
One thing that I want you to notice is most of those who cast their vote of 1 don't seem to post their opinion or review on imdb.com to this movie. They just rate it and go in silence. However, I don't criticize them because people have their opinion as everyone else does. But, they should show some opinion toward this movie to let a majority know another side of weakness or bad point.
Thanks
Different strokes for different folks, dude.
(please don't hate me for saying something so cliche)
I adore the movie but you never know how someone else is going to react to something. Hell, half of them probably got it home and turned it off immediately upon recognition of the fact that it's in black and white AND has subtitles.
They're just idiots who haven't seen the movie and rate everything by 1.
shareI agree. How can there be 280 people rating it a "1" and only 7 rating it a "2" and one (!) rating it a 3?
imdb is filled with people with nothing better to do than to run around giving "one" ratngs to movies they've never seen.
the number of people who have given the greatest movie of all time, namely "casablanca", a "1" now runs to four figures.
shareThis kind of topic is everywhere - people vote 1 on films they haven't seen for various reasons (especially when close to top 250, lots of people then downvote a film to stop it). Don't even try to understand.
shareIt doesn't give it justice. Even if one doesn't like it, at least it was effective in showing just how scary things got.
shareMaybe it was a little bit scary at some point in the end .. but overall I find it very overrated.
I saw so many Holocaust movies and I don't really see how this one gets such a high rating in comparison, maybe if it was around 7 or something this could be reasonable.
But there is absolutely no comparison between this one and the other Holocaust movies like Schindler's List and Life Is Beautiful.
My rating 4.5/10
You know, I keep trying to tolerate "Life Is Beautiful" fans, trying to understand their their sensibilities...but comments like Qtek just keep making me lose respect for them.
I've heard LIB fans claim those who don't like Benigni don't have any feelings, but you've got to be one cold-hearted sod to not let The Shop On Main Street get to you emotionally at least a little. The shift from comedy to drama in this film is far more subtle and effective.
And spare me the garbage about Americans not "getting" European humor. I'm an American, and while the humor in LIB never worked for me, the humor in TSOMS worked well.
I'm sorry, but I don't respect those who give this film a low rating.
I found Life is Beautiful to be incredibly simplistic and not really funny. I originally gave it 6.5/10 when I first saw it and my most recent viewing confirmed my rating.
The Shop on Main Street was a very well done movie. I definitely give it around 8 or maybe 8.5 out of 10. I did think the movie could have been cut down by about 10 minutes - some scenes with him hear the end when he saw the unfortunate Jews being taken away could have been cut down a bit.
Schindler's List has sentimentality at the end (the current time stuff especialy) but for me it is 10/10 and is my No. 3 movie of all-time (after Vertigo and Rules of the Game and ahead of Some Like It Hot, North by Northwest and Chinatown).
People are just voting the ones because they want there favourite movies to move higher. I know someone who says he has 50 accounts and votes 100s of movies 1s and his favourite movies all 10s obviously.

I'm afraid my interest and respect for the scores on IMDb are very low.
The one person (I read bellow) who give it 3, well, perhaps they just didn't like it, and that is.. well, ok.. But '1'? That has to be political - Either from people of dodgy views on the subject, or from a group trying to push 'their' film higher.
It's a flawed system.
few visible scars

I'm guessing a lot of people who rate movies like this 1s are people who were forced to watch it in class or something before they are really able to understand it. Not saying it simply isn't to the taste of some, but to me rating a movie a 1 is saying it's basically devoid of value. I feel even if I don't like a movie I can at least appreciate some aspects of it.
shareI have rated 7,027 titles on here (70% films, I think). 104 movies 10/10 and 6 films 1/10. Perhaps quite a few of the films I rated 10/10 deserved a lower rating but I really feel those I gave 1/10 were indeed "devoid of value". But just my opinion.

I'm on the road less traveled...
woooot did you really watch 500 movies in two months? You've got 7,507 ratings at the moment haha. If you actually did watch 500 movies in a little more than two months I think you're an awesome guy, would be awesome to only watch movies the whole day long
shareI watch a lot of movies but I also work; go out and do things like the average person. Some peoples' hobbies are varying things, I like movies. They're mainly all I watch.
So many out there, so little time.

This is an interesting subject. It seems that any movie you select is going to get 10s and 1s from people on this site. And that is true of those who write reviews here and give their reasons.
But that is fine, as far as I am concerned. People have different opinions and I am glad they feel they can post them here. I like the fact that I can read diverse opinions of a film, even if I think some of the reviewers are off base.
The scores on this site are not based upon science. They are a compilation and only have relative value, meaning they only reflect the opinion of a community when considered in relation to each other. In other words, if a film scores 8.5, that only means that the community of voters consider it better than films that scored lower, and worse than films that scored more than 8.5.
The concept of justice has little to do with scoring. Granted, if enough people were to attempt to sabotage the rating system (why?) by using 50 screen names (get a life!) to artificially rate the same films, it could distort the ratings so much that they would be useless. But I think if they were that bad, we would be able to see it.
Thankfully, I still regard the scores on this site as meaningful. There is a really good chance that a film rated 8 is better then one rated 3. Even more important, the reviews help me understand the viewpoints of other film watchers, many of whom love cinema.
