reply

actually, the character is gay

reply

Bisexual, actually. Obviously, Will-35. Bisexual. On the moring after, by the pool, Raymond Swan says Wade Lewis likes "any age, any sex . . ."

reply

Yes, Redford plays a matinee idol who "always liked the boys" - as Swan's wife drunkenly reveals to Daisy. In the late 60's and early 70's whenever this film appeared on the afternoon "Dialing for Dollars" movie, that line was always cut out. I had heard that for years Redford tried to get that scene deleted and/or keep the film out of release -- either being homophobic or thinking it would hurt his career if people knew he played a homosexual in one of his first films. He was a pretty boy back then, but hasn't aged well.

reply

I disagree about Robert Redford being "a pretty boy" in 1965. The word "handsome" is more accurate. As for his aging badly, maybe you have missed his many public statements about not wanting to get plastic surgery. He wants nature to do what it will do.

Robert's wrinkles come from simply getting older. He never has had a drinking problem. He's a Mormon.

reply

I think the problem with Redford's face now can be attributed to bad plastic surgery.

reply

No, it looks like too much time in the sun without sunblock.

reply

"He's a Mormon." You kill me.

reply

more like he's a Moron!

reply

I think he looks damn great for 78!

reply

His gay/bisexuality is referred to. Yet we never seem engage in any gay behavior. It was 1965 after all.

reply

I believe he was suppose to be a homosexual but had an ulterior motive when he married Daisy Clover. He probably did it to further his career and to try to put off any gossip and negative publicity of his alleged homosexuality.I think he looked at his relationship with Daisy as an acting challenge much like Rock Hudson did in the 1950s when he was forced into arranged marriage by the studio and his handlers.A gay man in this situation can use his imagination when making love to a woman.

NO, NO, NO, NOT in REAL LIFE! (not that there's anything wrong with that, lol)...in the MOVIE he is a closeted gay who marries to throw off suspicion. This movie portrayal mirrors the real life Rock Hudson situation.

In real life, Robert Redford is, AFAIK, straight as an arrow (not that there's anything wrong....).

reply

He is an old-fashioned serial seducer. Once over the finish line and he loses interest. You might call it the Casanova Complex, a kind of sexual kleptomania. Sad, how much he misses.

reply

Yup,and there is substanual reason to suggest that Daisy Clover is loosely based on Judy Garland who also had affairs with gay/bisexual men.

reply

Hi kamenberinger,

I recently read the book - Daisy is a fourteen-year-old girl who lives in abject poverty in a trailer with her crazy mother in a beach town in 1951. Nothing in the book remotely resembles Judy Garland's story.

reply

The time period for the movie is changed to mid-30s. The parallels to Judy Garland's life are superficial at best.

Thank you, thank you--you're most kind. In fact you're every kind.

reply

could you possibly mean "substantial"?
