Best line in the movie

The best line in this whole movie is at the end. When the Color Sgt. is taking roll call and one soldier doesn't answer he doesn't skip a beat and says speak up son you're not dead.. I saw you..Classic!

reply

"Don't point...dat bloody spear...at me."

"Zulus....fahsans of 'em...2

reply

My favorite line was:

"What the hell do you mean "cowardly blacks?" They died on your side, didn't they? And who the hell do you think is coming to wipe out your little command? The Grenadier Guards?"

Also, honorable mention to my second-favorite line:

Chard:
"The army doesn't like more than one disaster in a day."
Bromhead:
"Looks bad in the newspapers and upsets civilians at their breakfast."

Lots of other great lines too which have been covered on this thread. There are so many great ones i'm very strongly tempted to quote more, but if I do i'll be quoting half the movie lol. Great movie with lots of great lines.

"The comfort of the rich depends upon an abundant supply of the poor."

Most of mine have been named ... I also liked when Hook was leaning over the delirious Maxfield -- "You lucky bastard!"

reply

I always found Hook's verbal abuse of poor Maxfield totally hilarious.

Why can't you wretched prey creatures understand that the Universe doesn't owe you anything!?

reply

Much of it is but I found that line more poignant than anything else. I think Hook at that point really is envious of Maxfield, whose derangement means he's feeling no terror for the carnage that's closing in.

Another great exchange I don't think has been mentioned:

Bromhead: Don't you see what I'm driving at?
Chard: That you're the professional and I'm the amateur?
Bromhead: No. I mean that at this moment ... I wish I were a damned drinker, like Hook or Hitch.
Chard: But you're not a drinker, are you? You're an officer and a gentleman.

reply

Did Chard say, "Drinker" or "Ranker"? I inferred Chard was saying that he couldn't bear the responsibility of Command & wished he was just a rifleman.

reply

On further investigation (namely looking at the script), you are right, it's "ranker."

I sometimes struggle with British accents.

reply

Sometimes I feel it's just 'poorly thought out subtitles'

reply

Bromhead said that, not chard.

The Boer scout(?) after Bromhead complains about "the cowardly blacks"

"They died on your side! And who do you think is coming to wipe out your little command the bleedin' grenadier guard!?

reply

Good quote, but Adendorff didn't use the word 'bleedin'. I doubt if any Boer would.

reply

Good point, David.

reply

You slovenly soldier, Hitch !

reply

"You're all going to die!"

reply

not since we've been chatty

reply

I think the quote is actually "Not since we've been chatting, no. Started the barricade, though, managed to think of that." ☺

reply

My other fav line is by seargent boure to the worried lad "never mind him boy, get back to the ramparts with your mates" soooo comforting.

Also when chard does the same thing and says to another lad :

"How old are u boy, doesn't matter, stay by me"

That makes me tearful

reply

My favourite ones:

"I came here to build a bridge".

(Lieutenant John Chard, Royal Engineers—Stanley Baker)

&

Sgt. Robert Maxfield: You're no good to anyone, except the Queen and Sergeant Maxfield!

Pte. Henry Hook: Well thank you very much, the both of you!

And James Booth's way of saying it!

reply

Yep, would have to agree. Quite a few good lines delivered. I like:
(Zulu army chanting) "They have a decent base section...but no tenors!" (something along those lines)

reply

Literally everything the Colour Sergeant says.
