Bancroft is sublime in this film

Anne Bancroft later in life fell into the common trap of aging stars and tended to play to the back of the room but in her heyday, she was capable of beautifully subtle underplaying. This may be her finest performance - such a moving, perceptive portrayal of a woman, three-times married, driven close to breakdown by a philandering husband and a massive brood of brats.
