Who should play Higgins in the remake??

I was thinking maybe Michael Caine, but he is probably a bit too old by now.

What do the rest of you think?

There should not be a remake.

Hugh Grant, Colin Firth and Ralph Fiennes are too handsome for Higgins. They'd all play the part well, but looks wise, I just don't see it.

Michael Caine or Kelsey Grammer from maybe 10-15 years ago would work, but Caine is definitely too old for the role, and Grammer is getting there (I COULD see Caine as Eliza's father, Alfred Doolittle. And the role is tailor-made for Caine's accent)

I agree with the earlier posters. Hugh Laurie is the perfect choice. He's not as good-looking as Grant, Firth, or Fiennes, he's the right age for the role, he can definitely play Higgins' nasty side, but he could also play the sensitivity.

Plus, the built-in fan base from house will definitely pack the theater. That's not to say that "Oscar Nominees" Colin Firth or Ralph Fiennes wouldn't pack them in. Firth is riding the wave of his recent Oscar nom, but I just can't quite buy him as Higgins. Fiennes seems to be more involved in ensemble pieces, of late. And again, they're just too good-looking.

Laurie has both the look AND the fan base. And while Laurie, Firth and Fiennes would all bring in audiences, Grant just isn't going to fill the theatre, so if they're looking to have a successful box office, Selecting rising star Laurie is a better plan than going with the waning Grant. Of his last three films, only Music and Lyrics broke 50 mill at the U.S. Box office. American Dreamz Wasn't successful at all, and his most recent effort, DYHA The Morgans only made 29 mill of it's nearly 60 million dollar budget in the U.S.

Higgins HAS to be Hugh Laurie. He's the only one that can bring everything to the role that Harrison did for the original. If I had to pick someone other than Laurie, I'd probably go with Timothy Dalton. But he may bring the same problems that Firth, Fiennes and Grant do. LOL.
I love to love my Lisa.

JOh Barrowman or Hugh Jackman. that's just what i think. those guys (especially Jackman)can do anything

Seconding Hugh Laurie.

And Caine for Alfred Doolittle.

Besides, as we've seen from the original casting of Audrey Hepburn over Julie Andrews, Charles Shaughnessy won't have his big screen debut with My Fair Lady for the same reasons Julie Andrews didn't.

Hugh Laurie!

He speaks with a posh accent. He can sing. Brilliant actor.

I think that Will Ferrell should play Higgins. He's very versatile, charming and devilishly handsome.

ALAN RICKMAN (circa 2002)

he may be a bit old now... but they can die his hair like they did for HP or something.

Alan Rickman would be good as Higgins. I thought of him just after I sent my post suggesting Ralph Fiennes or Sam Neill.

Don't know, but how 'bout Keith Richards as Alf Doolittle?

reply

Hugh Laurie. I think he would be fantastic in the role. Kelsey Grammer did play Higgins in a NYC production of "My Fair Lady" a couple of years ago. It was a very limited run but it did garner excellent reviews for KG as well as the entire production.

Ralph Fiennes or Sam Neill

I heard it is between Hugh Grant and Colin Firth.

I posted an article on one of the threads on this subject which said that Sony has said that if Colin Firth doesn't play the role, then the film won't get made. I think Emma Thompson who is writing/wrote the screenplay originally suggested Hugh Grant, but I am not sure of the reason he has been dropped.
