A Bunch of Liberal Propaganda

The liberals like to believe that the Spanish Civil War was between the Fascist General Franco and the Democratic elected Loyalists. In fact, the war was between Franco Nationalists and the Communists. The major objection to Franco was that he was helped and supported by the Nazis. The liberals don’t seem to mind that Finland was also helped by the Nazis. Little mention is also made of the fact that Portugal and Ireland also supported Franco. Communism wasn’t considered that bad back in the 1920s and 30s. The basic idea of eliminating poverty is an admirable concept. The problem is that the major communist states today are run by totalitarian and oppressive regimes. World opinion of Franco after the war was also influenced by the liberal literature written on the subject. Hemmingway’s ‘For Whom the Bells Toll’ was completely sympathetic to the Loyalists. Hemmingway was probably a communist - at least a communist sympathizer. He also socialized with Castro. People’s opinion was also shaped by movies that were seen around the world. Not much is said about the killing of Catholic priests by the Communists. I seriously doubt that a priest would help a bandit like Peck. World opinion was also shaped by the International Brigades - volunteers to save Spain from the Fascists. Most of them were Communists. The Loyalists sent the entire gold reserve of Spain, all 170 some tons of it to the Soviet Union for safekeeping. Spain never got it back. History has shown civil wars to be the most brutal wars. People seem to be the most brutal to people they know. That plus the fact the Spanish are on the brutal side – look at the inquisition and what they did to the natives in the Western hemisphere! For some reason or the other, I remember some numbers. The Loyalists committed around 40,000 summary executions. It is estimated the Nationalists executed 150,000 during the war and 50,000 afterward. That fact did not exactly endear them to world opinion. The liberals don’t seem to care how many millions Stalin and Mao killed. The liberals do not like the fact that Franco is a dictator. They don’t seem to mind that Stalin and Mao are also dictators. I visited Spain in the 1960s. It was clean, inexpensive, and crime-free.
